and then cases do Not need sealant when tightening? Shows using sealant glue in the manual. Green bk calls for "Gorilla Snot!"
 
Silicone is HIGHLY UNRECOMMENDED unless it is a high quality variant designed for the job - I have always used Threebond (used to get it as a Yamaha spare part), but there are so many these days it's hard to know which colour to choose - gorilla snot was used by the factory and was very good stuff.
 
I am still surprised to this day the fear of silicone sealant. Most if not all modern bikes and cars are assembled with it. I have been using it since the 1970's to seal the crankcases of many types of bikes without issue. Just don't use too much!

And no I don't use it anymore for the crankcases, the modern anaerobic sealants work even better.
 
That aint silicone , Red Hermatite or what ever that shit is , holy crap get some on , shouldnt leak now 😂😂😂, bet you enjoyed cleaning that up Grant
 
It was silicone.
They had used blue silicone for the crankcase halves, red for the head and grey for the primary cover.
Aye, took a bit of effort to remove it.
 
Found this lot just on the cam cover.....  :o

The surplus anaerobic sealant excess wipes off or washes off. It remains in a liquid form while exposed to oxygen. Used Loctite 574 for many years building Porsche 911 engines. Vertically split aluminum cases and they never leaked.  No soft plastics residue floating around the engine. Only a freshman would use silicon sealants.

Good information Steve.. bit off point, but I do hope you guys are loctited in these COVID days.. apparently today even Canberrians are banned from the safest state in OZ..  ;) I just wonder how the Bungedore Quilting Club will go under these trying conditions.. :P
 
Feels like we're in one of those 'Escape from (insert city name)' films down here in Mexican Melbourne! Trying desperately to get work done on the SFQ, but running a house full of people in lockdown kinda gets in the way!! If I was single it would be finished in a week!!
