Engine noise transducer?

Some years ago I took my Turbocharged KTM SM690 for a dyno run. The bloke doing the dyno bolted onto the engine some sort of transducer so he could hear engine knock and ping.

I'm not sure if it was wireless or not.

I want to get my hands on one so I can record engine noise after I put a rebuilt crank into a Zane, and then compare down the track on the bike, and compare between bikes. Particularly on the race bikes. It's just an experiment. If it works, I'm looking at using a wave form analysis program between the 2, or more, recordings to filter out changes. Don't know if it will work. Don't try, can't win.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Try googling "engine stethoscope"

You will find gear like this https://www.sidchrome.com.au/product/combination-electronic-stethoscope-kit/

or this https://www.amazon.com/Steelman-Pro-78684-Bluetooth-ChassisEAR/dp/B015XU4ARU

This is probably what was used for dyno pulls:

Don't waste your $$ on an electronic stethoscope or a chassis ear-I've owned both.

I have one of those like the Dr's wear, but has a huge long probe on it. Fantastic for cutting factory noise out, while pin pointing bearings, in a conveyor for example, that are about to fail, if they haven't already. But where to get one that will fit inside a helmet, I can't help you with.

I've used a Bosch Knock Sensor with a spectrum analysis program, to look for detonation on an air cooled Ducati.
No electronics needed and pretty cheep from a salvage yard, BUT its linear response starts at 5KHz.
IIRC some other brands were tuned at lower frequencies.
You could try a PC mic with a stylus attached .
For recording/analysis, I regularly use "Audacity" - it's free and quite sophisticated.

Car makers use a piezo knock sensor with each one being tuned to each engine. You could use one to just read vibrations, the Jaycar one would be OK.
