Engine Temp Sender

Can you tell the bike is in bits? :D

Anyway, the temperature guage on my RGS does work, but never rises much above 50 degrees C.  Could be the wiring (probably not brilliant), could be the guage (probably not fixable) or maybe the sender.

So, is the sender a generic part I could get from my local auto factor if it turns out that's what I need?

At current temps it won't rise much over 50? anyway..... reckon the temp guage is just as vague as the speedo!  Only see temps of 90? and more in 35?C+ ambient and thrashing on the autostrada!

RGS/SFC sensors are identical.

it takes a loooong time for that gauge to show a reading normally. as you live in northern Teuchterland at this time of year 50 is probably about right on a shortish run.
Should get to 80 on a warm day and 100 when caned mercilessly.
You could blank off part of the oil cooler to see if that helps the gauge reading.
It may show if the gauge is working as it should.
 
Mmm, good points, although I think Keith was seeing more on his guage t'other day.

50 degrees is bollocks anyway, the water in a car radiator is at least 80.

yeah but the sender is touching the water, and water is probably the best conductor of heat there is.
I don't know where the sender is plumbed in on an RGS but if it is into a big block of alloy then it will take ages to heat through.

If Keith's was showing more than yours then that suggests yours is iffy right enough.

I remember Stevio saying that by the time you get a warning from the oil temperature gauge your engine's most likely blown anyway ...  :o :D
