Good Morning all.

Some of you will have seen my ongoing efforts to making my Jota run as it should, from tick over to the redline (and beyond!). I've gone from swapping out faulty BTZ boxes, fouling plugs and adjusting valve clearances, right through to installing a complete Redax ignition and genny system and total carb rebuild with new inlet stubs.

The result is that finally, she now runs like a dream, from a low tick over, right the way through.

However, what this means is that she will now sit there on revs lower than ever experienced in my ownership. At this low tick over, there is a "clickety clack" sound emanating from the left side casing. I'm guessing that this is slack in the primary drive train struggling with the power pulses between the crank and gearbox. I'm sure you guys will know for sure and how to rectify, so as a newbie to (correct running) triple ownership, I thought I'd ask. Thanks
 
My 3 guesses, the primary needs adjusting,easy job and depending on what chain is there are a couple of ways to do it. The clutch cush drive rubbers need replacing, trickier or the Jesus Nut is loose and that's very bad.

Thanks Vince. Fingers crossed it's one of the two former solutions, I was never a fan of religion!
 
Dont let it idle too slowly take it up to over 1000 rpm at least.
Slow tickover is not good for an engine and as you are finding you are getting noises that probably wont happen at a correct idle speed.
Thanks, that makes sense. I'll turn it up a bit once I'm over the novelty of having a low tickover!
 
I couldn't believe how my 3c sounded with its John Wilson Ignition first fitted, very different to before that happened.

Mine runs soooo much smoother now. The main thing on mine causing low rev poor running was the cracked inlet stubs, I'm convinced. Still, the rest is all sorted too now.

That nut can be the source of "the noise" and is frequently tightened qwithout a proper means of locking the crank, the ONLY sure fire way to get it tight enough which is torque high enough to keep the road wheels on a Challenger tank, is to use a crank locking tool,The club has one and a special socket to go with it, if you dont have it you will never get it tight enough, the correct torque is FT plus 90degrees. Always clean with spirit the male and femal parts of the fixing, use Locktite and a NEW lockwasher every time.

I had an annoying rattle from the primary side of a series 11.
The cure came from Ralph at Motalia.
The cog on the oil pump apparently came in slightly different sizes.
So long ago I changed it I can’t remember the details but it cured the rattle.
 
Thanks chaps. Sounds like I may have opened another can of worms/pandoras box! Think I'll start with the simplest and eliminate from there. Out of interest, are the usually rattle free on that side, assuming all is correct, or is there usually a degree on clutch noise anyway? Thanks

There is always some noise.
Experience will help tell what's acceptable and what isn't.

There is always a fair it of noise generated in the primary drive generally a few causes some fixable some not
Have a look in there and check the crank nut is tight the circlip is secure on the clutch drum and the chain isn’t too stretched if all Ok close her up and ride the bike with ear plugs in, generally the rattle is only there at low engine speed 😁
