Exploding Ball

Just replaced Clutch push rods and balls on my CL, went out for a test run and lost the clutch after about 10 miles. Fortunately it went close to home, so only a short push.

Had a look and found the ball at the end of the push rod stuck in the arm.

Any ideas why?

Constant pressure on the lever, ie, not enough play in the cable.  Looks like a lack of lube as well...

So, my questions is;
Are the two pushrods also welded to the internal ball?  I assume so.

& reckon moly-grease is the go for sliding pressure points.

Yes the the rods and the centre ball are welded together, also welded to the clutch pin.

So lack of lube or not enough play on cable? I was still getting clutch drag with the clutch fully in so there should have been enough play.

Or both...

"Clutch drag with the clutch fully in"  Slipping with the clutch engaged?  Drag with the clutch disengaged?  ??? ???

Play at the lever (gearbox) should be about 0.5mm, equates to about 2-3mm at the lever on the bars.

Dragging with the clutch disengaged.

I noticed reference to using Tungsten Carbide ball bearing on the forum, they don't seem easy to find if you only need 1, how about hardened Stainless steel?

Normal ball bearings have been fine for decades.

Adjust correctly and lube properly.  Are you using correct push rods?  These need to be hardened at the ends, no use sticking a couple of bits of mild steel in there...  Actuating arm looks like stainless, doesn't possess good wear properties either.

I made a stainless rod once after new plates, it lasted 20 minutes. Loss 2 mm of length anywhere and = no clutch.
They need to be the right length.

Phew. I read the title and thought this would be discussing detonating gonaditis  :o

Yes the arm is stainless and longer that standard.

The rods have hardened ends, does not seem to be much damage to them, apart from ball remains

Rod was stuck to the T-Bar, but light tap and they cam apart, faint ring where the rob had stuck.
