I've ground Ti bolts - they produce a pretty purplish spark!
When I read your post about the sparks and your old man, Rob, I thought of Iaian Banks' 'The Wasp Factory' and how his old man could tell what he'd been drinking at the pub the night before by the smell of his farts ... turned out he was lyin', and had phoned the publican to get the info!
