Fitting a reg/rect

I measured the voltage on my 78 Jota when revved it measured 17+ volts it has an Odyssey battery and DMC 2 ignition . Originally the bike had CDI ignition a monster battery a rectifier and no regulation as fitted by the factory .is it recommended to fit a reg/rect when using a modern ignition like the DMC 2 with an Odyssey battery
Thanks

Assuming your voltmeter is accurate, this will end in tears.  An Odyssey won't last long when hit with more than 14.8 volts.  The DMC will shut down at high voltages too (18v from poor memory).  My similarly equipped machine only managed around 16 volts with a similar setup.  I fitted a combined reg/rect unit (Electrex RR51) which clamps the voltage to a more reasonable 14.1 volts and provides a gen light output too.  Unfortunately, 14.1v is insufficient to fully recharge an Odyssey, so a battery charger is needed to top it up.

No problem - though I can't advise on the best location for one...it was a tight squeeze!

I ask because I have just fitted RR 60 reg/rect and noticed the copper in the original wires from the pic ups showing their age !
Thanks for your helpful informatiom Rob

Yes, the verdigris is a worry.  I use a fibreglass pencil to remove this (with the conductor strands held against something solid) - vital for a decent soldered or crimped connection, less so when a screw is mashing down on to it.  :D
This is the sort of thing - ebay item 281178279715

Need to be careful with those pickups though. My Jota partially melted a forge JE piston because of a pick up shorting causing huge pre ignition. Now runs the Sachse/Red conversion so charging, timing and pickup issues sorted. Will see if the journos liked it soon.. ;)
