Float hight?

I'm starting to wonder if some of the later triples (like mine) had a different sized float valve (giving a 22mm float measurement when measured in the traditional way with carb on side) - with the float arms parallel to the carb face when the carb is placed upside down (as mentioned in the dellorto guide).

Initially I took my readings I was assuming they would be somewhere close to 17.5-18.5 as it is a low mileage bike and the floats looked like they have never been adjusted or bent in any way. When I recorded a measurement of 22mm on both floats on all carbs some thing seemed strange (adjusting the tab to give 17.5-18.5 needed a good deal of bending which seemed very excessive - as per prev. sketch).

Looking at Maitland's original post shows that he seems to have the same float measurements to mine (22mm approx)

Looking further I saw the posting http://www.laverdaforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=40233.0 , where Jugs_S could have actually have taken photos of my float before and after attempting to adjust to the 17.5-18.5 measurement (he also recorded approx 22mm initially) - these photos match my sketches (and seemed like deja vu to me). This thread shows 2 different sized needle valves which are the key factor in the different measurements of float.

Beyond this thread Scrumpy confirmed that he ended up setting the floats at a measurement larger that the 17.5-18.5mm figure but does not have a record of the final value.

Has anyone else come across this?

There are dimentional differences in float valves but the float height should always be 17.5 - 18.5mm. Adjust the tab to give the correct float height, if you are having to move the tab a very long way make sure you don't have two fibre washers under the valve body.

I don?t doubt that you guys are correct with the 17.5-18.5mm measurement. I assume that there was something wrong with my method. I did create a jig to ensure consistency across all of the carbs. When reassembled the bike would not run well. I increased the float height which cured the problem, unfortunately I never measured this. The carbs where stripped and reassembled shortly after this by Stevio, I asked him to check float heights, don?t recall any adverse comments. Carbs will come off again soon as the bike has been stood for some while. I will look closely at this measurement.

Mmm, had the same thing Brian, bent the tabs a long way to get the 18 mm hight.

Seemed to go alright last weekend so I'm not worried about it. Got to make a new belly pan first, ground the sides out of the mk 1 version. :D :D :D
