Foot peg bolts

On my 78 triple non-rear set, standard foorpeg set up, I was removing the bolt that holds the peg onto the bike and it proved very difficult to remove. It came out with some coaching but now the thread is fucked and I cannot screw a replacement bolt back in. What are the thread size and pitch and how do I fix this? at this time when I try to screw a bolt in it tightens up half way screwing it in. I wonder if the 'Bushman side stand set up afffected it. If I can find one would a thread chaser clean up the existing thread or if I have to go a bigger size and tap it, what is the recommendation? I'm prepping for a 1500-mile ride, push comes to shove I guess the peg could be tack welded in place.
Any help is welcomed and appreciated.

If you’ve got a spare tap, grab a grinder and cut most of the taper off, that way the renovated thread will be uniform all the way through.
 
Standard steel bolt, or stainless steel?

It cannot be stressed enough to apply some sort of anti-sieze to stainless threads, especially in high-torque applications.

Standard steel bolts can corrode, but the M12 thread usually withstands relatively unscathed when the bolt finally comes loose.

If all this doesn't apply, the bolt or internal thread must have been fucked when it was last inserted... a pinch of sand can produce similar results, like not chasing the thread after blasting>powder coating/painting.

Unless the internal thread hasn't been totally exterminated, running a tap down should restore it enough to remain strong enough for a footpeg/sidestand mount with a new bolt. Lots of meat in M12! A M12 Timesert would be a far better option than going to M14, that's a 22mm hex head you're looking at!
