forks topping out

One of my marzocchi suspension Laverdas has started front fork topping I am wondering if I caused the problem by making a longer pre load spacer on top of the spring????
What actually stops the topping oil flow back through that primative valve, that short spring in the damper assembly?????
Can someone give me some guidance here?

take the spacers out and see what happens, you are probably already on it, the extra pre load on the spring is probably causing too quick an extension.

I had that problem with my mirage a few years back: cut the preload spacers in half to achieve about 35-40mm of Static sag and All was well once more..

Isn't topping out an indication of insufficient rebound damping at near full extension? Would higher fork oil level alleviate it? Or heavier fork oil?

Or the rebound springs have sacked out and are now more or less solid - giving a harsh top-out. Unlikely but possible.

Think you have answered your own question Maurice.
Check your static sag; about one quarter of total travel unloaded and one third with rider.
