French Bikers Are Revolting...

Used to be the same here in Victoria (Australian state). it's been legal since 2015 even though when it wasn't legal I've never been fined for doing it.

Victorian Road Rule 151A and B permit lane filtering in slow moving or stopped traffic:
  • For motorcycle licence holders (not motorcycle learner permit holders)
  • At speeds up to 30 km/h, with a penalty for exceeding 30 km/h while filtering
  • If ‘safe to do so’
  • Unless otherwise signed
The only letter I ever wrote to a newspaper was in Perth in response to the classic angry tin-top driving loser writing a whinge about how motorcyclists should have to stay in their lanes like car drivers do. I pointed out the reasons we do it and emphasised that cops on motos always did it too. Is it possible that French riders fang through the gaps, thus increasing the likelihood of a stack?

I had a prick in a car sit about half a metre off my taillight on a 100kph freeway once, after I'd lane split in heavy traffic to the lights on the entry ramp. I changed lanes to try and get away and a huge truck drove up literally half a metre from the guy's rear bumper - just to give him a taste of his own shit. I gave the truckie a big thumbs-up as I shook my head in disbelief at this arsehole in the car.

If you watch any of those utube vids of riding, some do crazy aggressive splitting way past reason and get abusive when drivers expecting close to normal speeds get surprised by suddenly appearing bike at double the surrounding traffic. And the next most common is huge pickup drivers becoming crazy mad when they get split past at lights and then try and CRUSH the bike that did it. The local vids lately have people driving the wrong way up expressways. And a little while back there was a 30-minute in-car dashcam of some Ice addicted maniac driving a stolen V10 Audi through Newcastle, running through Stop signs at full speed in the middle of the day with people everywhere. It doesn't matter what laws come and go, plenty just don't give a fuck

The delusion of all politicians is that passing laws making things illegal will actually result in compliance......as Michel Foucault (French philosopher in the 60s) expounded, it’s only the addition of surveillance (or the perception of surveillance) that results in compliance.

Oh boy ...... this could be fun!

The most insane motorbike riding I have over seen was in the French town of Meaux. Sportsbikes bouncing off the rev limiter through and between the traffic as fast as they could go. I think I was the only bike in town riding "normally". We picked the place off the map as a place to stay and train it into Paris, without knowing it was the nearest town to Disney´s Land and barely a room available.

Another perfect example that in spite of all the means of information we have, large amounts of people have absolutely no grasp of reality and project their own film unto the screen of reality. Covid for instance has shown that on a very large scale and modern means of information, if they can give access to reality also allow the spreading of rumours. very quickly. Rumours have killed more in human history than any Covid.

Lane splitting has never been allowed in France. It is very clearly written in the highway code which anybody with a driving licence has learnt at some time that lane splitting is forbidden.

Every body does it and of course, in case of accident, the insurers come into play.

Since 2016, there was in certain parts of France a test period in view of allowing lane splitting. That test period came to an end at the end of last year and it was due to be prolonged.
Not reading to the end or more often not reading at all leads to the rumour and sends lots of irate and often violent people into the streets and sometimes into the ballot boxes.
The globalisation of rumour has made that type of reaction very common and increasingly a factor to contend with.

I avoid the Paris ring road whenever possible, it is small and sunken below ground in many places, it was built in the early 1930's I think, so they had a huge amount of forethought to the future, it must have be a superb revelation at the time, now it is too small, cars and trucks are a lot bigger width wise, it is very often jammo as well, the lane splitting is usually done by bikes and scooters going down the centre of the two lanes, I have had hassle when on my Pan European, because I have been splitting (filtering we call it in the UK) and have come to a pinch point where (my wide) bike cannot get through, this causes a queue of two wheelers keen to "get on" and when eventually a car allows me to get into either the left or right lane, a swarm of buzz bikes sweeps past, very often gesticulating their distaste at me, but always I get stuff coming up behind me when filtering like this in France because those little bikes and riders are absolutely pissing along, serves them right for getting the law reinforced, but then again they are not really motorcyclists at all, they are commuters mostly. Trouble now is there are many superb, out of town, non motorway roads (many of the North South ones used for car racing in the 1930's using huge aero engines) where 140KPH and 160KPH is very often possible and safe but now restricted to 80KPH, that is probably the fault of (so called) motorcyclists who don't respect coming into towns and villages requires restraint or that 160KPH is inappropriate if the traffic density, weather, visibility or side roads presence etc are evident.

Hi Clem,
The Paris périphérique is post war and now very often 3 or more lanes.
My father always used to mock Londoners because they had no ring road around London before the M25.

The périphérique is now often limited to 70 km/h and there is talk of 50. I avoid it and the whole area in fact, going via either Reims or Rouen if I'm taking the motorway.

Filtering on the périphérique has always existed, between the outer lane and that on its right. Paris is part of the areas where filtering is being experimented.
It is however France's biggest source of organ donors.
The SAMU, the French advanced medical services experimented using motorcycles to get through the périphérique jams some time ago but rapidly put an end to that due to the danger, even with sirens and flashing blue lights.

I’ve ridden in Paris on a few occasions and have always been astounded at the risks taken by other motorcycles and scooters especially high speed filtering and lane changing.

Yep, there is a high concentration of two wheeled nutters there.

When I did my military service in Paris in 82, I'd often ride down on my 3CL. I'd filter through traffic on the périphérique very cautiously. Every so often, I'd pull over because I had a few bikes behind me.

Very much the same around Lille where I live. Congestion is important and there's quite a few 2 wheeled nutters who imagine that hazard lights on a bike are a life saver.

I do find when filtering in France that the vast majority of car and lorry drivers are really good at spotting you coming and making room. I always try to do that foot down acknowledgement French bikers do but I reckon for some reason I don't look as cool !

That's because you're on the wrong side of the road.

I think a correction needs to be made about this post......all french are revolting.......don't forget that the frogs really do hate the Brits and feel it their duty to try and punish any Brit on french soil...be warned!
I think you'll find it's the English, who deem themselves British, that they hate.
They have no problem with the Écossais, fellow members of The Auld Alliance.

Yes, the French love the Écossais. And the Irlandais, and the Gallois.

Proof is that the last parcel I posted from France addressed to the UK ended up in Ukraine.
Now if that isn't hate.....
