Fuel Hose

I worked 20 years as a Alfa -Lancia and Fiat mechanic and we always had more than 2 meters in stock that time for the old Fiat 127 - 128 and others.
And that was Cawis 7x12 exactly the same as the factory used in the seventies.

I use 7 x 12 fuel hose in Green... thats green green not blue green. The market will crash and Cavis may go out of business so Im reluctant to reveal my sources :D :D  Its that cheap I change it every year and comes in 5 meter lengths UK Mail order.
Also available in 7 x 14, 6 x 9, 4 x 7 and 3 x 5..

However If you want to know, I'll post it up. :-*

I've started work on my project to get it fettled for the summer. I need fuel hose, so are you going to let us in on the secret........?

Stuart (fingers crossed)

Ta Rob  Moi aussi :D

Ta Rob, but sadly NO AUSSI as the postage to Oz is ridiculous.

Will have to try and source locally.

Dave

What length you want could post on to you when mine arrives.

How much for a jiffy bag to aus i wonder, 20 quid?

Ill take 5m lemon

Cosi

If you can get it in a Jiffy bag then without tracking and under 300gramme it could be ?9.21 and it might even get there with Royal mail .
Biggest issue is the weigh as the bag probably weighs 100 gramme.

Happy to weigh my length so you can pro rata it ... :o  :D

DHL is big bucks, about ?38 so you'd need a big consignment.

This is crying out for some organisation and co-ordination.
You guys could really do yourselves and each other a favour here.
One guy buys in bulk in the UK and sends to one guy in Oz, who distributes to the needy on local postal rates.

Just sayin...

already tried that Grant
I bought 300' from the fuel line guy in USA, 1/4" blue, nice kit, or seemed like nice kit at the time
when Peter was over recently we dragged the box out to cut some off and found that the remaining stock had gone all sweaty, inside and outside, the whole roll of it
so remaining 260' or so is now junk

so lost out on that deal big time

That's not good to hear.

I weighed the 7 x 12mm hose I have, its 250 grammes for 2.75 meters, = 90 grammes /metre = 0.454 kg per 5 metres.
I remember it came in a sealed clear plastic bag, where that would be adequate for postage I guess so, as it was strong and nothing going to get broken.

Some pics.

The "sweatiness" of the polyurethane tubing may not be as bad as it seems. As far as I can tell (Grant, you know more about this then me :)), the plasticizer most likely to be used is a phthalate, either butyl benzyl phthalate or di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate. These are used in plastic manufacturing to allow the molecules to link to one another but allow them some movement, sort of like a lubricant. Excess plasticizers are always released from plastics. That's why new PVC has such a strong distinctive smell, that's the volatile plasticizer evaporating.

Anyway, all plasticizers are highly soluble in just about all organic solvents. Petrol/gasoline is a typical organic solvent. I have to dig out my extra polyurethane tubing and see if it's sweaty, but I'm betting that all I have to do is run some petrol (or some other solvent, alcohols should work just as well but be less dangerous) (and cheaper too! :o), wipe off the outside, and the tubing will be just fine.

If the plasticizer does get carried into carburetors and somehow get deposited, it should be washed off immediately with a fresh charge of petrol. The small quantities involved should not have any effects on combustion either.

PVC in it's natural polymeric state is rigid, as in double glazing window frames.
Plasticisers are used to confer flexibility for tubing or sheeting applications.

My urethane chemistry is a bit rusty but I think polyurethane tubing has no plasticisers as the natural polymeric state is already very flexible.

That is not to say there is not a ton of additives in there, from stabiliser for fuel application, to UV resistance to antioxidants, pigments and so on.
Without knowing the formulation or seeing the additives that exuded it is not possible to speculate further.

Thanks LJ
I was going to buy 5m as I have a couple of bikes. Postage from them is GBP16.90 for 5m, GBP20.80 to 2 x 5m, GBP24.70 for 3 x 5m so real price is probably around GBP5 per 5m.

Oh well I guess I will just buy some clear stuff locally and change it on a regular basis. From my hazy recollection the bike had clear tube when new anyway and I don't think the colour green will make it go any faster.

Dave

Well there you go. Ended up ordering 10m from them as it works out at AUD$4.60 a meter delivered (for 10m order) compared to AUD$11.70 a meter from the local "cheap" supplier. Buy local and save Australian jobs - pig's arse. Will share it at cost with local yokels.
