I took the fuel taps off my old petrol tank yesterday and the filters were covered in crud (paint & rust!) so I decided to strip them as far as possible and throw them in the ultrasonic cleaner for an hour or so. Loads of nasty black gunge was left in the cleaner when I emptied it so they obviously needed a good clean out but now they need fitting to the newer, resprayed tank.
The question is should there be a fibre washer sandwiched between the tank and the tap? The taps pull up nicely with the outlet in the right position but when I took the taps off the old tank one side had the remains of a fibre washer in there and the other didn't. Neither side leaked before and I've not put any fuel in the tank yet but I don't want to put petrol in there then find it pisses out for need of a washer.
