Future proofing...

Apart from 1000mile oil changes/strainer cleaning, biennial brake fluid and fork oil changes and mileage based valve shim/camchain tensioner/primary tensioner adjustments, what else would keep my immaculate 1200T running reliably for the next 10 years?

I don't have the heart, or cash, for expensive remedial engine work so wondered what else I might do to reduce the likelihood of it occuring!

I tend to do 30 miles or so, once a month in the winter, mainly to keep the fuel flowing, and more, more regularly in the summer.

Cheers,

Simon

Dunno about taking it out for such a short distance in winter- change the oil, drain the float bowls and let it sit out the salty months in a dehumidified garage.  I turn mine over by hand every now and then, probably not necessary but I do it anyway.

Might be ok if its got a Stainless exhaust, its very bad for Chrome exhausts.Something about producing water vapour that rusts them internally on short trips. Longer running gets them hot enough to boil off this. That's what they used to say why Contis would rust out quickly.Could be crap but thats what I heard

As long as te exhaust gets hot enough to displace condensation in the system.

I would put it to sleep for the winter but use it for longer trips in the good weather.
Laverdas like to be used.
Strange things happen to them when they rest up for months.
Tyres lose pressure, batteries go flat, terminals corrode, that sort of thing.
Best getting hot oil flung around the inside of the engine as often as possible. Stops things going rusty.

Thanks all,

Perhaps I should clarify... it lives in a dehumidified garage, battery regularly charged and the pipes are stainless - 30 miles of fun certainly burns off anything in the pipes!

I think preparation for storage is important, and use the winter do do those jobs like checking for corrosion on battery terminals, cleaning out brake calipers, regreasing pivots etc etc.  Do it properly and it'll be ready come the season- a thirty mile ride in the winter up here means hours of cleaning afterwards.

I reckon you have got it pretty well nailed.
