Garelli 150

so I have not even looked at my Garelli 150 for so long I can't even find my originalforum posts from a years ago......

everything is totally dismantled execpt the engine. Frame and body work have been blasted etc and repainted. Quite some time ago I sourced a bunch of new bits and pieces still sitting around somewhere in boxes. Even got some replated wheel spokes from Wolfgang, and acquired new "knock off" shouldered aluminum rims and started reconditiong the bare wheel hubs. The forks are rebuilt, and so on.

the motor has been sitting untouched on the corner of my work bench since I renovated the garage and put in the work benches........

I have been in self isolation at home for 9 days now. I am working from home by remote computer access, phone, and "Zoom", but I am starting to get stir crazy. So, out to the garage last night to do an initial clean of a cluttered work bench, and this weekend going to have a look at the 150 motor on the bench, so "while I am at it"..... who knows what might happen.... ;)

more to follow

A KL 150 Paul? A Garelli 150 is a rather unusual machine. Were parts hard to get? Cheers
Ian

Hi Ian

yes, a roughly 1966 (?) KL 150. Mechanical parts similar to an American Eagle 150.

I could use a gasket set, especialy a head gasket, and a set of points, amongst other bits. Appears I am going to have make all control cables unless someone can point me to a source.

Wolfgang Haerter apparently has a few 150 s in bits, he was able to supply wheel spokes, for example.

The parts crucnh will really start when I beginssembly after I deal with the engine reconditioning.

ps for another turbo project if I do another one I am still thinking a Laverda triple, but I would like to get the Honda CBX Turbo sold first, has not been much interest other than several crazy trade offers so far......

Paul,
Drop Phil Hitchcock a line @ sales@roadandrace.com.au. He has a shop in NSW/ Australia and he has always been interested in small capacity Italian singles. His bread and butter is Ducatis but there's a good chance he may have a contact that is of use. Cheers

Don't know of a parts source Paul. Some bits came out of Cor Dees' a while back.

I have two in the garage awaiting work. A 125 Sport that had a lovely patina as the jornos and sales experts say, before it was burnt, and a partially dismantled 125 Trail belonging to a son which we were supposed to start work on together but we can't meet up at the moment.

talked to Wolfgang by phone earlier to day. He and Margot and Chris and Cameron are all well. He also mentioned that shipments to and from many countries have now be ended by various governments.

Wolfgang tells me I am out of luck for engine gaskets, will have to make my own. Not the end of the world, I will get some gasket sheet. The head gasket did not tear when I took the head off, should be able to re-use it with some sort of gasket sealer.....

Better news is Wolfgang says he thinks he has some Deves rings he had made a long time ago for the 150's, and may also have an oversize piston with rings, and is going to check out his old stock for me and let me know.

On removing the head and barrel it is obvious that water has gotten in over the years, the cylinder wall is "water spotted" for lack of a better description. Will have to decide if a light hone and new rings on a stock piston will do the job or whether an oversize piston will be required.

When I laid the head upside down and put some oil in the valve chamber with valves closed and spark plug in place, the liquid ran right through the valve seats quite quickly. Wolfgang tells me he is not aware of where to source new valves, so I will try to recondition with valve grinding paste by hand and see how I make out.

A couple of photos of start of dis-assembly.
