Hi, thought I had seen it all.
Yesterday I was rebuilding the Mirage engine and had just fitted the pistons and dropped the barrels down over them.
Then I realised I couldn't get the liners through the base gasket.
Turned out the holes in the base gasket were smaller than the diameter of the liners, so barrels back off and winkle the gasket past the pistons and rings.
Fortunately I had another base gasket and this had the right sized holes.

I know the head gasket is universal between 1000s and 1200s but I thought the base gasket was also universal.
Must have just been lucky all these years (and didn't know it...)

I can't remember where I got it from as I have had several kits from various sources and have a pile of them in stock.

you are correct the head gasket is the same, but the base gasket differs bewteen 1000 and 1200, if you buy your gaskets from Classic gaskets (Donna and Tony Brancanto), then you will always get both of them, and copper exhaust rings plus valve stem seals so your stock of 1200 base gaskets should build up, if you buy them from most other suppliers you only get the one you ask for (and a slit in the packet done with a Stanley knife) so no copper rings or stem seals and a few 0f the others only give you a very basic gasket kit (which is generally OK) I mean why nbother with a rev counter cable gasket if you are not removing it?

I bought some BMW spare a few years back and a nice sump gasket.

The spares were beautifully packed and the gasket was placed at the top of the box hard up to the cardboard.

So along comes Mr Bean with his stanley knife and cuts the box open and ooops .." Is that gasket meant to be in 2 pieces boyo ? "  :o  :o  :o haha

I have also been known to throw perfectly good parts in the bin along with the bubble wrap...

I sell quite a few gaskets and always write "gaskets - please do not bend" on the packet as info for both the Post Office and the buyer! - Laverda have always listed the 1200cc and 1000cc base gasket separately - the 1200cc one can be used on the 1000cc but not vice-versa. - Regards - Phil
