Is there any way I can be sure the gear changer is set up correctly before I fill her with oil?

Testing neutral is sufficient?

Cheers
Ed.

Gearshift linkage looks upside down to me. I don't suppose that matters though, just looks a bit odd.

What I usually do is put the bike on its centre stand so the back wheel is off the ground, then work it up through the box to top gear while turning the back wheel by hand to help the gear dogs engage. Change back down to 1st and then neutral. If all the gears select OK and the lever springs back to its centre position each time, then you've got a fighting chance of being able to change gears on the road.
If you have difficulty selecting the next gear (changing up or down) then you may need to adjust the return spring eccentric.
If the selector drum doesn't turn freely, you may need to re-align the selector housing by loosening the cover bolts and tapping it with a soft hammer or lump of wood.

Cheers,

You either have a centrestand that is easy to use but the wheels are touching,or wheels are up and its eye popping hard to use.Its not worth mucking with the stand till any chassis mods, pushing the forks through, not possible with the std handlebars, speeds up the steering. To me one of the easiest cheapest mods is the Bushman Rob Kawasaki sidestand mod.Do Cams gear change  suggestions,if it misses 5th or 1st after the oil is in you can still adjust the selector by tilting the bike over chocking the centrestand, keeps most of the oil in.Getting all the gears can be a pain.

Im wondering if I will get the gears all lined up as I have new clutch plates.

Everything seemed pretty stiff and grindy when I tried to rotate the back wheel.

The plates have not yet been oiled.

Everything is oil free.

Perhaps I should run it for a while before trying to get the gears all correct.

It goes into first and neutral ok.

I have fitted new clutch plates several times and it all went back together with no issues. A bit of a fiddle to get all the plates lined up but after that it was a piece of piss.
I have no idea what these issues you are experiencing are caused by but I think it is not to do with fitting the new clutch plates.

Eddie,

Before buttoning up, check ALL the gears!  It is not uncommon to have the box changing sweetly from 1st to 4th, without a chance of selecting 5th.

There's quite a few threads somewhere here dealing with the selector set-up if you run into problems.

DON'T "run it for a while" to sort the gears, they won't!  You'll only end up bending or otherwise damaging something.

Guess you'll require a few specialist additions to your tool box, like a wood block for instance.   Or just get the stand sorted properly... :D

You need to vigorously work the gear lever and spin the read wheel to check your getting them all.We have all been there with this, not having 5th or needing to do a double upshift to get 5th isnt fun. They come good with some fettling, welcome to the wonderfully world of getting to know your Laverda

Ok I see, thanks guys.

So if I'm not getting all the gears do I rotate the off centre screw slightly? The workshop manual doesn't give much advice.

Is that the only adjustment?

Cheers
Ed
