Gearbox bearings

nah, get it moving with a bearing splitter, (looks like a pair of half circles with knife edges and pulled together with long studs), very often cheap Chinese kits have long studs with feet to complete the job, but once you have created a gap between the bearing and the gear next to it, you have beat it with a copper hammer, no need to worry about the bearing as it is scrap, reinstalation requires a long tube to tap it in place, beearing on the outer edge only, but boil it in water first, add bay leaves and it/ the kitchen will smell nice as well.

I've got a bearing splitter Clem, but too small for those two big bearings. I'll order a bigger one when I get back and then choose between a bigger three legged job or a press.. A splitter behind the bearing and then a press seems a good idea. I've even found some space in the garage.

I can't justify a press, as much as I'd dearly love one. i've managed to remove all sorts of bearings using splitters and three-legged pullers. I recently bought a very big 3-legger. I heat my stuff gently with an electric paint stripper.

Clem, what did you mean 'bearing on the outer edge only'? Not the long tube bearing on the outer edge of the bearing?

I finally bought a 20T press a few months ago. Finally gave in due to rebuilding my tractor’s transmission and bush technique no longer working. You would not believe how many jobs I’ve done with it - should have bought one thirty years ago. Not expensive and has paid for itself a couple of times already I reckon. So go on, treat yourself!

I don't have one either but I have used my mates press often enough to justify having one. He has also just brought a 50t press with accessories so I now can bend 10mm plate to right angles.
