Time to expose my ignorance again...

Checked the charging on my SF2 - 13.5V max at 4,000rpm.  Figure I should take a look at the bushes in the generator.  Book says take out the two long screws on the end and the cap should come off revealing the bushes.  The cap won't come off though.  A couple of light taps with a rubber hammer and it will come up a little but there is still something holding it on...almost feels like a spring...pry the cover up a little bit and it snaps back down again.  Figure I better consult the pros before I do something profoundly stupid.  Advice?

It could be the brushes themselves springing onto the commutator.
It pays to check the genny function first before ripping it apart, on an SF charging problems are often the regulator. It is best to have both amp and voltmeter for testing. Here is max output test and some other stuff.

You'll have to remove the rubber cap (No.11).
The screw behind it, which connects the cable to the terminal,
has to be removed to take the cap off.
