Hi…I need some help…I’m looking at a 1981 jota…frame and engine number 7253…only history is that it was registered in the uk in 1995 and is now registered as historical…..same owner for 8 years. It had a lot of refurbished work done when after he bought it by a well known person you would all know…
I would like to know if it’s a genuine jota and was it always orange….thank you….i have been looking for one of these for too long now ! 🤣🤣

If it's the one I think it is,I'm amazed someone has spent £10,700 on restoring it and only done 1000 miles since!
I bet the seller is looking for around the £14000 mark which in today's market may be a tad optimistic, however if it's one of Keiths (bless him) creations you know it will be a well sorted machine.

Good luck

If it was sold elsewhere you have no guarantee it started life as a proper Jota. I think South Africa and Australia got the real deal but a lot of countries just got the paint job and badges.

Bit more interesting reading, regarding series 1 and series 2 cross overs........and the one for sale at the start of the post is engine no.7250

There was a series 2 Jota in Ged Shortens workshop last week being resurrected because of minimal use after restoration. That was a lovely looking bike but as for being a genuine Jota from day 1 with the pistons and cams who knows? It wouldn't make any difference anyway, if it has them fitted now it's a proper Jota in my opinion. If you want a genuine Slaters Jota then the early ones are more likely to be the real deal.

The actual bike that is on eBay is what I’m referring to but is not pictured on here
My other concerns are that the exhausts ,shocks and front fender are not original parts…🤷‍♂️
That would also decrease the value I would assume?

It's the wrong tank for a series two isn't it? I would have said the mudguard is correct but the tank isn't.
Looking at the shape of the guard, maybe not.

Yes its a Series 1 tank and cable clutch but its looks nice and the work thats been done is considerable - there was definitley a crossover of parts as they introduced the series 2 - Mudguard looks ok

That's an interesting thought regarding the tank however as far as I know this bike falls into the late series 1 production so close to the crossover into series 2 production.
If the exhausts are Malcolm Cox silencers they are quality items and certainly can't be seen as a detriment to the bike.
Mudguard looks good to me.

The bike is about 80% nice.
Some parts like swingarm and chain cover and inside the tank look aged as do the clock surrounding.
But I’m probably being too fussy!
Are the shocks and exhausts still obtainable, and if so what costings would I be looking at please

Original shocks are remote reservoir Marzochis and tbh they are rubbish even when sealed again new oil etc - there are plenty of suppliers for new - dependent on your budget - I currently have basic yss on mine which work 10x better than the old Marzochis - exhausts are also available from Various with the best fitted from Malcolm Cox in my opinion or you can get some secondhand originals from someone but they will not be as smart as a newly chromed set - shocks from £180 exhausts around £600 but you would need to check and dependent on whether you had downpipes as well as silencers - the bike is for riding 😉
