Ghost Strike 668 Starter Clutch/Sprag

My starter clutch/sprag gave up on me and I need to replace it. I know that all Italian bikes use the same type just a few sizes. Ducati bikes up until the 999 (2006) used the smaller one and from the 1098 (2007 on) they used the larger one. Does anyone know the correct size for my bike (1998 Laverda Ghost Strike 668)? I can get anyone of them for around US$ 80-150, complete assembly. Thanks in advance. FYI I'm in Phoenix, Arizona

As Paul says, sadly life is not as simple as you suggest! I'm not familiar with Zane engines, but know that its sprag clutch presents a challenge. Someone familiar with them will be along soon

I can tell you that the Zane bikes uses the same starter sprag as the 668 ATLAS and aparently this is not the same sprag as the 350/500's from Breganze.

I suggest you try OCT in Germany, they speak English, dont forget the time lag

Thank you all for chiming in. I spoke with the former service manager of the bike shop in San Francisco California; they had the Aprilia, Ducati, Laverda and KTM lines. He told me that all starter clutch systems are manufactured by Renolds from Wales UK and originally there were 2 sizes and in 2007 they added a larger stronger one that is in today’s bikes. He only didn’t remember which model’s sprag is the exact fit for my Ghost Strike so I was hoping that maybe someone had to do it before and knows which one fits. I read on this forum that the KTM 640 LC4 is the perfect fit; I just wanted to confirm that someone has already done it and it is true before I go ahead and buy it before I open the bike. Thanks again. I’ll try and if all goes well I’ll post it here.

Remember to post on the results, alternative parts supplies are like gold 👍

I've posted similar pics and info before but with PMs requesting measurements etc. I'm going to post it where everyone can see.

While the inner and outer components may be Laverda specific, pretty sure the one-way clutch itself is not and can be substituted.

It runs in outer diameter 82mm 68mm, inner diameter 52mm and is 12.5 mm wide. (edit 3/27/2022 PS)

I have not had any issues on my Zane' bikes with this part, I think like many of the problems with the Zane' bikes, lack of frequent changes and low oil levels can contribute to problems with the sprag though it seems reasonable to expect wear after high mileage. The spring that helps the roller dogs engage can be tightened a little if that's all that's wrong by winding the inner end further into the outer.

Is the OD 82mm the sparg itself or the assembly? I'm finding a bunch of them with OD 68.5mm ID 52.mm and 12.5mm wide sprag alone without the housing. Thnaks in advance.

Don't know where 82 came from, apparently some disconnect between eyes, brain and fingers, dug out the scrap of paper again which says 68/52/12.5 rounded from 68.23, 51.73, 12.46. Age and red wine may have contributed. Good to have alert readers!

piranha-bro2. Just the sprag, not the entire assembly. I tried to explain earlier that all Italian and most other European bikes share the same few models of the sprag sub-assembly within the starter clutch assembly. The housings of the starter clutch assembly are all different for mounting reasons but the sprag itself is the same throughout all of them.
