After one week of ownership my Ghost 650 has died!

When I turn the ignition on the fuel system doesn't kick in nor is there a spark, oh and there is a red light (oil pressure?) that is constantly on by the clocks too! Any ideas, hopefully its just a fuse?!   :'(

there are a few Zane Laverda owners here, and hopefully one or more of them will chime in, but frankly I don't have as clue as the Canadian government prohibited the importation of the Zane era Lavera's and I have never had my hands on one......

you might want to also try your question on the Zane Laverda forum hosted on Yahoo, there are apparently about 1,000 members worldwide and they are a pretty keen bunch. This link should get you there...

Hi GhostRider,

check the fuses first, they should be under the little triangular cover on the right side. If its a blown fuse - easy repair. The next thing to check is if power comes to the fuse box. There are 2-3 things to check if not:

-battery OK?
-Ignition lock: it is a well known failure that it brakes. Can be replaced easily, sometimes comes cheap in ebay, else check with 3Cmoto in italy or with www.octeam.de
-there is one cable suppling power that tends to brake or be cut through. I try to find some pictures and post them here.

EDIT: couldn't find the pictures, but here is a description what to check:

Take the wiring diagram of the Ghost and look for the fuse-box (Nr. 13 on this diagram). Now look for the fuse that serves the ignition computer (Nr.3? 15 A). Check if there is power going in and out. Now follow the EXIT of this fuse to the ignition computer (Cabel "Az B", would mean blue/brown); check the wiring Diagram of the ignition/FI box; check if power is delivered to the box. If not, the cable is broken. Easiest way would be to make up a new separate wire-connection from the fuse box to this connector. To easily check if that is the route cause, simply bridge the cable first (Exit of the fuse-box to the entry of the FI-computer). BUT PLEASE CHECK THE RIGHT CONNECTION!!!!!! If you turn on the key-switch with the bridge installed, the fuel-pump should be activated. Also check the relays!! They are known to fail... Typically they are normal car-relays, you should be able to source them from a wrecker or your parts dealer around.

-sidestand-switch: it is also quite common this sucker brakes. But would - theoretically - only make trouble if you engage first gear...

Don't worry, with a bit of patience it will be an easy fix, quite sure ;)

Ghosts should all have the P8 Computer I think, WM16M was only used on the 750 S and later (I think from 1998 or 1999 on) or maybe with the introduction of the water cooled engines. Ghost is air-cooled - right?

Thanks guys, that gives me something to go on.

The battery is OK, all the lights work and the starter motor turns over just fine. There is a intermittent clicking noise when the ignition is on, whilst the temperamental taco/rev counter actually starts working (for once) and bounces between 0 and 1000 rpm.

After having a quick look through one of the manuals that might mean dodgy circuitry?

Watch this space!

Heres one for ya, I went in the garage to try and have a look at the fuses etc. Before I started to strip it down I turned the key and the fueling system was working!

After using jump leads to start it (battery is knackered) it smells like it is severely over fueling and I guess the black smoke is a give away too.

Any thoughts?  ???

At least the mystery that is the oil pressure light is solved, it confused me as it wasn't working before it died on me, but now it does....hence me questioning its meaning in earlier posts.

Dont jump your bike off as this can cause damage to the ecu sort out a new battery

Try the Zanelist Forum esp for Zanists for good advice and help, Google Zanelist.

Lothars already covered what to check, but one thing i have found is that its a waste of time trying to find the problem if youve got a fucked battery

They suffer, in standard trim at the best of times with a good battery, dead battery plays havoc with the ecu.

near the ecu there are 4 relays from memory, change them all, they are shit and will let you down

If you want a hard copy manual, moto italia have themfor 28 P

Battery is on top of the to do list tomorrow and I have a few relays somewhere about the garage!

Is there any special procedure for removing the ECU, other than disconnecting the battery? i.e. earthing myself to the bike frame etc...

Edit: How do I remove the battery without having to strip the whole back-end of the bike down? I've also noticed the high and low beam on the headlight comes on together on low beam, but only the high beam is on when set to high beam?

(Italian electrics hey....)

Angle grinder?? :D

Somewhere along the line ground and low beam cables have been swapped around... only need to find out where and then correct it!

Who said Zanes were maintenence free?
