Grab Rail

Question,
Are the brackets that hold the rear grab rail mounting in the same position, (the rear triangular ones under the seat rails on both sides) on all 180 frame versions?.
Reason,
I want to fit an early, (short) version grab rail in place of the later long version, this will mean welding on brackets to take the front fixings, (similar to the upright shock mounting, but they wouldn?t need to be as beefy) and I want to know if these rear fixings are in the same place before I spend vast amounts of dosh on a short one, (if I can even find one!).

Me neither.
I thought the shortie just bolted on to existing mounts, whether laid down or upright shocks as all the necessary fixing points were still there.

I will try to be more specific.
My frame is from a series 2 TS1200 Mirage, it uses the long version Grab rail which I consider ugly. The bracketry on it was used to clear the plastic under seat trims I have discarded, (also ugly in my opinion).
The grab rail bolts on in two places on each side, one of these is the top shock mount, one is further back on the seat rail, (the triangular one I refer to) I want to know if this triangular bracket is in the same place on all 180 frame versions, (upright and laid down shock versions) If it is, then the short grab rail will sit in the same relative position over the seat tail, if not then it wont and I will need to modify accordingly, (I would love to draw a piccie but my computer skills wont allow!) I will obviously need to weld on brackets for the front mounting if using the short grab rail in roughly the same position as where the upright shock mounts would be because the later frame doesnt have these.
Is that a better explanation?.
:D

Hi Spider
So I am not alone in the preference for the short grab rail? 1 Just did this change on my 79 Jota...mine had mounts for both angled and upright shocks. i needed no new brackets, but spacers are needed, which i don't have...and as the bike is in sunny Glasgow with keith Nairn at the mo, hopefully he will sort it for me (he's sorting a hell of a lot else!) I sourced the new rail from him too...I have a spare mint long one if anyone wants to buy it? Can't be bothered with e bay so will keep otherwise...Oh, and the shorter rail looks great, and shows off me Wilburs :D

Spider,
the front of the grab rail mounts to the upper shock mount and the rear of the grab rail mounts to the bracket on the frame usually used to mount the seat on a 3C. It should be there on yours, as it is present on 4 180 triple frames I have here.
For spacers you could cut sections off an old set of chromed handlebars to mount to the upper shock mounts. That's what I did years ago to one of mine.

The brackets I described from memory are rounded on the underside not triangular, I am a twat at times!, anyway as you can see in the picture the rear ones appear to be in the same position a Joe's, goody, now all I need to do is source a reasonably priced short Grab Rail and do a spot of bracket addition. Thanks for the help guys.
:D

Your frame does not appear to have the (redundant) upper shock mounting bracket needed for the shortie grab rail.
My old 1200 had both so I assumed yours would too.
The rounded brackets that you show are what I described as the seat mounts for the 3C.

Hi Spider ,

If you email me on gotojoe123@aol.com I'll gladly zap a few photos. Lose alot of detail with compressed pics.

ps The short grab rail is the dogs danglies !

as you surmise the short grab rail will require welding something to attach the forward end
the rear tabs are the same as on your series 2
so you have an easy way to locate where the front mounts will fit

i, too, prefer the shorter rail
less for aesthetics than for its greater strength

Hi Nick7
I am interested in your long grab rail.My 1200 came with a large luggage rack that covered the rear bodywork over the tail light, ugly so I removed it and now have no grab rail at all.Let me know how much ,we may be able to do a deal.
