grease or fluid

hi, minor daft question;  whenever I've pulled brake calipers down i've just used brake fluid itself to slippry-up the new seals on reassembly. With my fancy pants brembo seal kit however I get the wee sachet of assembly grease. Is it better to use that for some reason?

grasso gracias,

I bought a Castrol version of rubber grease years ago after talking to Ian Gowanloch and Phil Hitchcock.

Never thought I'd ever use it much but I've found I use it more often than I thought.

i was more thinking for nurses in rubber uniforms, but that's talc right?

so, for interest, where else would it have applications? What problem is it fixing?

Its used on "O" ring seals on underwater cameras, if that is any help.

Since I bought my big tub of castrol red rubber grease (from the MG Owners Club, because they were cheapest) I've taken to using a smear of it on anything rubber I'm assembling:

inlet rubbers, carb to airbox rubbers, bar grips, fork gaiters, pins on sliding calipers, dust boots on calipers and, no doubt, some uses I've forgotten.

It's amazing how much a little lubrication eases insertion of interference fit components - especially carbs on a v4 honda

Before I bought the red grease I'd found spray silicon lube to be helpful for fitting carb to airbox rubbers - I no longer heat the rubbers to make them flexible as the lube (either spray or grease) gets you enough play to make the job (mostly) straightforward

excellent stuff chaps. i can now think on a half dozen bodges that could've gone smoother with rubber grease. ace. Like an idea that answers many things at once, I'll now keep it on hand.

Should we start a Top Tips thread where it becomes a repository of validated useful advice AFTER the gang have argued and agreed over it?

Good idea!
Is this "rubber grease" anything more than silicon grease? The Brembo lube is clear, looks identical to my tube of lube  labeled silicon grease, which I've used on rubber bits for years..
