as I look at winding down and closing shop, been going though my "crap pile" and throwing shit out
there is a lot of crap that I kept thinking, well, maybe, one day, may try and sort out a fix
well fuck that, have thrown out over 2 dozen crank webs as well as a whole pile of other shite

and then we come to the Hydraulic sprocket covers as used on the later triples, these are of no use at all, totally stuffed up, they are gone
only 10 in the photo but found 2 more later, another Laverda design error
Is why we designed and machined billet hydraulic Sprocket covers

Yea Red, not surprised.. those disk brakes in the first picture would have been a bastard to design an efficient rear hub for.. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
 
Absolutely, more money to be made from selling new stuff at the moment. Mining dumps for materials on any significant scale is likely to be a post-apocalypse activity.
Have you seen scrap yards in the US? In less than ten years there will be piles of EV motors, batteries, etc from every YMM in scrap yards.
 
Still not getting the point... His parts are recycleable, Teslas engines, too. If you have a junk yard today, thinks a rotting and oil is draining into the ground. If you will have a junk yard in 20 years, it will look different just because the laws will change (unless you have fashistic leaders who give a shit regarding environment like some large countries currently have...). Still don't see the difference. It's just different junk.
 
I would have thought a Tesla engine is pretty useless without the batteries to go with it ..... unless by recycling you mean going straight into the mangle , rather than being re used to extend it`s original purpose .......... Around £10,000 average to replace an electric cars batteries at the moment .... ( about a quarter of the cars value when new ) ............. although manufacturers reckon they should be good for 20 years / 100,000 miles ( ie the life of the vehicle ) ......

The fly in the ointment regarding EV`s as far as I`m concerned is the battery pack ......... First there are the environmental concerns regarding the mining to extract the minerals needed for battery production ..... and then the need to dispose these battery packs in a responsible and safe manner when they have reached the end of their lives .

Will we in the future see cheap Chinese built Teslas complete with toxic and flammable battery packs still fitted , dumped in roadside ditches at the end of their working lives , because when the batteries die , so in effect does the car ?

I also wonder if the dream of 35,000,000 car owners here in the UK going electric in a few years time will sour , when a fair proportion of that 35 million all plug their cars in to recharge overnight ...... Where is all that electricity going to come from ?

The distribution network at the moment is hardly able to cope ......... Wind turbines in Scotland have to spend long periods switched off , because they produce too much electricity for the network to handle ..... and what happens when renewable electricity output falls to practically zero , which has happened on several days recently .......

The distribution network could be improved by building more pylons to get the electricity to where it`s most needed ( ie down south ) ......... that`s if they can find space to fit these extra pylons in amongst all the Chinese solar panels that Ed Milliband is currently carpeting the countryside with .....

Personally , I`d rather chew razor blades than switch to an EV until I`m absolutely forced to .... ( and when re-charging becomes as quick and efficient as filling up with petrol ) .........



My idea of the ideal environmentally friendly vehicle is that 1954 Velocette MSS I saw being offered up on EBay recently ..........

Having been built in Birmingham some seventy years ago , it requires nothing in the way of the earths resources in manufacturing terms , so it`s carbon footprint ( tyretrack ? ) as far as that is concerned was zeroed many decades ago ....... It`s only fifty miles away , so doesn`t have to be shipped all the way from China or the far east ....... It will thump along quite happily returning 80 mpg , and carries only one little battery ............... and I`ll bet a fair number of the 50,000 miles it has covered were recorded as a result of pushing it , rather than riding it ...........

What could be greener than that ? .............

Without getting drawn into politics- I think the point you don’t get is somethings are potentially recyclable but in reality don’t get recycled.
A lot of people can justify anything with “ it can be recycled” when in really goes to landfill or is burned. Repurposing is another word bandied about EV batteries when past their best but the reality is there isn’t currently a way of recycling them viably. The recycle symbol is slapped on everything , I think the packaging of a packet of Pringles involves 8 different recycling processes - hardly efficient is it?
I’m not anti EV or renewables, in fact I have solar panels on my roof & I fitted a power diverter myself- but I’m aware that the Chinese Coal fired panels are full of heavy metals and cannot be recycled as they are bonded into safety glass, so in twenty years they will be landfilled. I can justify all of this by telling myself in twenty years time they will have the technology to recycle them…
 
OK, getting your point better now.

I agree that not everything that can be recycled gets actually recycled (how many mobile phones have you laying around or dumped without giving them to the proper location for recycling... I am still collecting them, have I think something like 10 -12 laying around somewhere...).

It all depends on cost-efficiency. However, most of the BEV's simply haven't ended their normal live-span yet (aprox. 10 years), which is why there aren't to many recycling requests as of yet, which leads to no business case. That will change. First companies in Europe (and I know of at least one in US) have focused on repairing the battery-packs way cheaper than f.e. Tesla (but not only them) can supply them. F.e. a Model S Battery-Pack is something like 22.000€ or so in Germany. They repair it for roughly 1/3 of that price. If you think that is a lot - we are talking about Battery Packs in cars that have covered 250.000+ Kilometers. How expensive is a new engine or engine repair on a 300+ HP top class car...? I for one can tell that even a steering chain replacement on an Audi would have cost me 9.000€ at Audi and did actually cost me 4.000€ at a local workshop... And that was just the chains...

Same goes for the engines. There isn't enough business in recycling them, but there is a market developing, where used parts like the engines get traded. That will increase for sure, too, just like with normal cars. Only difference being that workshops need a special certification for working on high power circuits.

For the solar panels, I can assure you they get already recycled. Currently there seems to be just one company in UK that does it:


Might be though, that there are panels that are harder to recycle or non recycleable. One need to check before purchasing them...
