GT to the TT

Thanks to @Andy J for organising a great meet up and meal out with fellow Laverdisti this evening. Lovely to meet everyone. Excellent company.
Always happy to help fellow Laverda owners on a visit to the Island and look forward to organising further events in the future. I hope you enjoyed the Typhoon display specially laid on for you 😜

So, my GT to the TT visit is drawing to a close. I’ll be on the ferry in the morning, heading back down south.

Racing today was light but at least there was some. Unfortunately, I didn’t get to hear the 916s sing. With both the Formula 1 Classic TT cancelled on the Wednesday, and then the Senior Classic TT cancelled today.

We travelled back over the mountain section about 20 minutes after the roads were reopened and it was dry. The reason for the cancellation being wet conditions on the mountain.

But there you go. A good excuse to come back again. The vibe is a lot more chilled at the Classic than the main event, which I really appreciated.

It’s brilliant to have been here for a third time, met some good people, and had some great fun.

So, the GT to the TT adventure has come to a satisfactory close. Ferry crossing back to Heysham early on Saturday morning. I had a room booked for the night about 5 hours (with stops) ride away.

However, the heavens opened to the extent that visibility was seriously compromised, and conditions meant the balance was tipping too far into risk. So, I darted into a pub with a room somewhere in Lancashire called Rufford. And holed up for the night drying out kit, etc.

Then up at 6am and away for 7am, avoiding all motorways as normal. They’re just not fun on the GT and while it will happily chug away at 60/70 motorways on that bike in particular are just boring. Back home by 3pm with I think 4 or 5 stops, some briefly for fuel and a few longer ones to stretch the legs and grab a coffee.

I feel like I’m really getting to know the bike well now. The false neutral between 3rd and 4th, and less so 4th and 5th is annoying if you’re tired and not positive enough. But you can tell straight away just from the change, and snick it back up if you have to.

Love the way it purposefully chugs out of roundabouts in second or third. Roll it in, steady throttle through, then open the throttle and out he pulls. I’ve noticed that those big wide bars are great for quick, small, direction changes, and it responds especially well to firm pressure through the pegs mid corner without getting remotely upset.

Checked the oil when I got home and it hasn’t burnt a drop. It has lost a few drips from the annoying leak, although on the plus side Andy J remarked on how clean the oil was that had made a tiny patch underneath it outside The Palace in Douglas.

Got wet and dried out twice on the way back, skirting around rain clouds as they ambled across the sky. The bike is now bloody filthy and will have to have a proper clean…

Moments of note on the way back:
  • Drivers generally all behaved themselves, despite it being Sunday there were no ‘daydreaming incidents’
  • Getting punched in the face by a bee, that managed to get behind my ‘sort of’ goggles - got trapped and stabbed me in the eye while I found somewhere safe to pull over and come to a controlled stop, while swearing profusely
All-in-all, the trip was an absolute blast, and that concludes this little write up!
