I took up Marty's offer of a Brake fluid change and bleed, thanks, Mate. And we found a very odd thing on my bought out of Canada 4 spot Brembro callipers. Guesses on their spanner size for the bleed nippals wins 3 hearty cheers and my admiration. It's not what you might think.

OK, so I'm guessing it's not metric. How about 3/8" AF?
Hip hip hooray, we have a winner. It was to lose for 10mm allowing at least 20 degrees of swinging slop and 11 wouldn't fit. 3/8 af it was. But WHY is the question. Bought brand new about 5 years ago cheap from a bike shop in Canada.

Shortage of metric hex bar ? The hex portion is irrelevant to it's function so if all you can get is imperial, why not ?

3/8" UNF(?) thread is a close match to M10x1, which is commonly used by Brembo. Close match, but not exactly. A hamfistedmechanic backyard bodger probably wouldn't notice! Might even work OK for a while. 
Not at all unusual to find stuff like this used in the american colonies where metric threads seem to be something from another planet... guess the proper bleed nipple was urgently needed at some point and robbed from the caliper, to be replaced later with an incorrect item "that'll do OK".

Hex size, spanner size, they didnt get pulled only bleed so no idea what thread they are now you have downright scared me Piet. These callipers were brand new when I bought them and haven't been mucked with, came in the correct box ect as far as I know. It's the same on both callipers. As far as I know, Canada is a metric country so why would anyone do this. So they should be 10x1 thread and 11mm spanner?

I will fuck with a lot of stuff but not brakes. They need pulling and checking, I don't need to be thinking about this riding down Brown Mountain. If it's a bodge up they did a nice job, these nipples have an attached rubber cap that cannot be lost as it's got a nice rubber tether attached to the cap that goes around the nipple.
