H/D earth cables

77 Jota, took pictures of most things but not the heavy duty earth cable routing, dohh. Have one long one which looks like it can go to the engine to frame bolt above the chain. Where does short earth cable go, why two ? Thanks Richard
 
From my fading memory, the original earth "cable" on my '76 was actually a flat woven copper thing abouy 3/4 inch wide and about 6 inched long that connected to the frame close to the battery, obviously not more than 6 inches away :sneaky:

My current wiring has earth wires running everywhere rather than trusting connections through the multi layered paint, or scraping the paint away to allow a good earth and rust. Especially I have run an earth wire back from the rubber mounted headlight.
 
Generally one for the engine and one for the frame. IMO the best place for the engine earth is under one of the starter motor mounting bolts, the frame earth can go to the closest bolt on the frame (rust and paint free, as Davo said) with a smear of grease to slow the rust coming back. And if the cables are original, it'd be a good idea to replace them, or at least the lugs on the ends because they're sure to be a bit corroded inside by now.
If those main earths aren't good, then you can have all sorts of other problems.
 
Andy, thanks for reply, I have remove all the frame connected earths so looks like just need the engine earth strap.
