Searched the forum, but did not find a conclusive answer. OEM headers are stamped 040 right, 042 middle and 041 left. Is this in perspective of sitting on the bike?

Hi Gerald,
AFAIK it sorts as follows:
41 = LH
42 = centre
40 = RH

On my original one's there's nothing to decipher anymore. But I was able to sort them ok anyways.

Another set I just purchased came with "S", "C" and "D" ...

On my original set unfortunately the upper collar on the left one'd come loose. Took it to a welder - but learned it is brazed ...

that flange should not be brazed, but very often they are, the exhaust temperature is high enough at that point to allow the filler material (ie the braze) to become "creamy/pulpy" not terribly far away from melting, but never enough to actually melt, this allows the joint to crack and fail. TIG, (if you can get it clean enough), MIG or oxy/acet

usually it is driving direction.
Right curve right should be inside, left curve the left one and on straight track the center one shows the direction.

      Gerald the left or right side of a motorcycle is always from the perspective of sitting on the bike, it is the same sitting in a car. Think of it this way, your standing behind the motorcycle looking towards it your left is the bike's left. Go to the front of the bike and once again looking towards the bike your left is the bike's right side, your right is the bike's left.

Medical and Nursing students studying anatomy from textbooks have to reverse the images in their minds/practice, a surgeon's left is not always the patient's left,  oops! HTH
 
They get a texta out and mark my forehead when I get my eye injection. I expect it's also done when amputating bits. Saves on the expensive Court stuff later
