I have a steam engine model inherited from my father , i ran it when i was young - but it developed a leak on the main tank where the glass level tube was mounted - i tightened the screws but broke the glass tube accidently , i could'nt tell him and he of course passed on but i would love to repair it .

I have asked on a FB site and a guy has posted some pictures on a German site ( its a German Fleicshmann engine ) and i need to understand whether that website sells the parts - there is a photo of all the parts ( see below) with some text - i wonder if someone could have a look and see whether this site sells those parts

The third pic from the website shows the detail of the glass tube and its holder with some text " dichtungen wasserstandsglaser - would like to know what this means please - this pic is in the tab interessantes then tipps and tricks

Dichtungen Wasserstandsgläser

Die Originaldichtungen der Wasserstandsgläser waren aus hitzebeständigem Gummi und hatten die Durchmesser 3 mm / 8 mm und eine Stärke von 2,5 mm (Bild siehe unten) . Leider gibt es diese Gummiringe nicht mehr. Wenn man noch “neue” irgendwo ergattert, sind diese meistens schon recht porös und reißen beim Aufziehen auf die Glasröhrchen.

Als Ersatz bitte niemals einfaches Gummi oder ähnliches benutzen, das ist nicht hitzebeständig und verbrennt !

Ich ersetze diese Gummidichtungen durch entsprechende Dichtungen aus Silikon. Dafür habe ich mir ein Stückchen Silikonschlauch (gibt es im Modellbaubereich) mit den Durchmessern 3 mm / 7 mm besorgt. Aus diesem Schlauch schneide ich mit einem scharfen Cutter etwa 2,5 mm dicke Scheiben, die ich dann als Dichtungen benutze.

Seals for water level glasses

The original seals for the water level glasses were made of heat-resistant rubber and had a diameter of 3 mm / 8 mm and a thickness of 2.5 mm (see picture below). Unfortunately, these rubber rings are no longer available. If you manage to get hold of “new” ones somewhere, they are usually quite porous and tear when you put them on the glass tubes.

Please never use simple rubber or similar as a replacement, it is not heat-resistant and will burn!

I replace these rubber seals with corresponding seals made of silicone. For this I got myself a piece of silicone tubing (available in the model making sector) with a diameter of 3 mm / 7 mm. I use a sharp cutter to cut around 2.5 mm thick discs from this tubing, which I then use as seals.
 
Thanks very much for your time Jo - i have one of the seals so i guess i could try what he did - the elephant in the room is the glass tube which is shaped like a square C - i will try to mail him using Google translate to see if he know of any glass suppliers - it is possible to bend glass tube with a blow lamp - i could try as straight tubes are available here
