OK, ground the mother of a thing off the shaft. Used a cutting disc on the dremel to slice a wedge off the bearing parallel to the shaft then a grinding bit to complete the job.
Next time (although hopefully that will be a long time) I think I will be using a splitter and puller such as this http://www.bearing-king.co.uk/bearing/15-k-separating-set/3848. Probably also be useful for getting the top bearing off the adjuster nut.
They also sell a very nice internal extractor that will fit all internal bearings apart from the rear wheel (17mm ID) and which would save a lot of angst smashing the needle bearings out of the swingarm http://www.bearing-king.co.uk/bearing/21-4-internal-extractor/5568.
Their replacement bearing prices for genuine SKF are bloody cheap compared to Oz as well.
Allo allo, even cheaper on Ebay UK http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/GEAR-HUB-BEARING-PULLER-SEPERATOR-KIT-783172-12600014-/190387165484?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item2c53f5992c#ht_2589wt_905
