Hepco and Becker racks for Laverdas going away?

As far as I know, the 1200 and the 3CL frames are the same, at least from Model year 1979 on. the only bigger difference is the upper rear shock mount from my point of view. Not 100% sure where the brackets of the rack attache to the frame, but on the 1000 SFC /RGS, they do not use the shock mounts but some other points.

It is indeed just the jigs that are missing for producing the fitting frame. German forum fellow - as said - is on its way to get this done suiting his bike. However, this is a 3C with a Series 1 frame. If someone can confirm measurements and Mounting points of their rack system from H&B (Grant?), that could make things easier...

And please, guys: Corona has shut down almost our whole country. Give those small companies a chance to arrange this one-off-measurements according to the current government rules, please.

Rgs rack does!! mount to the top shock mount  ;)
Then sub/brace bracket too rear of seat frame. So only two mounting points! These racks and panniers only rated at 10kg each.

Not the best photos, but you get the idea. Non-existent triangulation of pannier brackets. Relies on pure clamping force which is in short supply from a plastic rear mudguard!
I believe original version mounted to inside of rear shock - this was from a batch of 10 produced to special order 2015/6.
I have run my own RGS with a similar setup. The shock bolt was tightened well beyond normal torque. Nothing moved, but ...  :-\

Rob, I'da bin awfully tempted to tack on another bracket to the footpeg bracket. Would have to be pretty curved to fit around the shock but even so...
You could make that problem a lot easier by replacing the shocks with thin rigid struts. And they'd never wear out, either  :D

Ken

That's what I did with my rack, it's very much stronger with that added. All it takes is a length of flat bar, 25x3 to turn them into a truss-like shape. Keeps my cheap arsed soft bags off anything that will damage them as well. It's bloody annoying looking for a weld repair on trips if you get any flexing and bouncing with them loaded.

NO, I added a long thin steel member that goes from the exhaust pillion bolt to as far back on the rack as I could curving outside and past the shocks and fixed at Multiple points. It changed the unbraced shape into a bunch of triangles bracing the hell out of it. Years ago the fibreglass panniers
I used on the 6-week trip I did through outback NSW and Queensland constantly needed weld repairs, the bags bounced up and down like wedgetail eagle wings resulting in the framework hardening and snapping. Not fun and not repeated since.  The so-called road from Goondawindy to Roma has these things called Paddy Melon holes, one mitre deep and 6 mitres long and there are hundreds of them, hit them at speed and they nearly wind you with the bang.

IIRC, the original H&B RGS/1000 SFC rack has the two mouning points on the rear holes of the frame (where the tube is flatened) and the front goes to the steel plate under the rear tube of the frame. see pic below

My SFC1000 is currently at OCT so I can not take a pic. I have the rack here though and could take a pic if needed. It defenitely has different brackets than this one...

Be interesting to know how that front arrangement clears the (RGS) sidepanels  Lothar.
Just for the record, pic is not my bike but it did get to Breganze and back as shown.

Ken's idea for bracing - whilst inelegant - is what's needed for a proper job.  And closer to the original Krauser brackets designed for earlier triples.

This is what I am talking about, you might think smart road builders would level them out but no, they just tar over them.

I've had H&B kit on my RGS for 20+ years. Excellent quality and it fits well if you take your time with small adjustments.
The only issue I had was with one of the pannier latches - the rivets securing the latch to the pannier sheared off and the pannier bounced down the tarmac at speed - user-error arising from the various 5-litre boxes of wine that I was carrying back from France.... :D A few battle scars on the affected pannier, wine boxes intact and the latch fixed with some M4 bolts that I had in my toolkit. That was many years ago, they've served me well since then.

The brackets on mine are the earlier type and I have the front mountings located on the top shock mount, but behind the lifting handle - keeps the whole plot tighter in to the bike and looks neater too. See my initial comment about small adjustments though, in order to get the clearances spot-on.
As with most assemblies, set it up with all the fastenings finger tight, then gradually work through tightening it all up.

Rob's pics are correct regarding the mountings - two each side - top shock mount and in place of the nylon spacer between the frame and mudguard; an additional bracing across the back below the rear light keeps the whole package tight and secure.

I've been sharing some pics and tips with Hooksey about the H&B kit he's recently bought for his Corsa; if anyone else needs pics or details for the RG-series kit, just shout up.

As an aside, I'm also interested in pannier frames and brackets to fit early 180 triples (1977, with upright shocks)

All these pictures of Argies is all very well but of little help to ken or myself: has anyone actually got an earlier Mirage/Jota/3CL frame to measure up or compare to one of these new fangled RGS thingies to assess the differences for the purposes of making a H&B rack?
thanks

Looks as though Lothars rack is the one you are after..... upright shocks n all  ;)

Al do tell re those suspenders on the rear of Argy, they look the biz  8)

Alan's mounting behind the grab handles isn't possible any more as H&B changed the design (without actually trying it on an RGS...)
When I got them to make another run their engineers decided to strengthen that area.
Ended up with all 7 having to be sent back to be modified.
They did fit, but you couldn't fit the sidepanels back on.
Only solution was to slightly reduce the size of the added support and then mount them outboard of the handles.

OK - I see... the RGS rack is then different from the 1000 SFC one, as the top shock mount isn't visible on the 1000 SFC...  ::)

Fantastic they made different systems for the same frame actually.

Hi Lothar,
Are you able to confirm what year/model the bike is that your friend has supplied to H&B for measuring (or even who he is so we can get the guy at H&B [Matthias Dzemski] to call him direct)? I'm getting pretty fed up about endless talk about RGS racks which isn't what Ken and I are after and don't really give a monkey's about.. thanks!
