Here we go again, saving us from ourselves. Experts involved, not good.

Anyone remember Martin Bangemann , a German politician , who , when elevated to the giddy heights of being a Commissioner within the European Union , was the instigator and driving force behind an attempt to limit all motorcycles to 100 bhp ...... something which was completely outside of his remit as a Commissioner ?

This was to address "safety " concerns ....... not put forward by an " expert " ...... just an un-elected bureaucrat , with an over-inflated sense of his own importance ...... ( and there`s a few of them around , in all walks of life ...... :) ....... ) ........

This was , of course , campaigned against by various motorcycling rights groups , both within and without the European Parliament ..........

Roger Barton MEP was one who spoke up for the interests of motorcyclists within the European Parliament ...... the BMF issued pre-printed postcards to be sent off by all it`s members , addressed to Bangemann at the EU ......... asking him to explain the rationale behind his thinking ......

As we all know , power outputs have no bearing what so ever on how " dangerous " a motorcycle can be ......... a school-run mum is quite capable of providing you with all the proof you need of that , even if you`re riding a 22 bhp Royal Enfield ......

This move by an un-elected bureaucrat was ultimately defeated , although there was a " gentleman`s agreement " at the time between motorcycle manufacturers , to limit outputs of bikes sold within the EU to 100 bhp anyway , in order to placate the Commission ...........

Just a couple of months ago , a Greek MEP introduced a bill to the European Parliament ................

This was to lower the legal speed limit of ALL motorcycles to 80 kph ...... that`s 50 mph .......... on EVERY road within the EU .........

How far has her bill progressed though Parliament ? ........ You can look that one up for yourselves ...........

All in our best interests , of course ...........

Used to be 50mph with a pillion in Victoria Oz. Got rid of it by organising rallies of bikes on major highways in peak holiday traffic doing 50 in both lanes.

Big campaign here just now, police stopping every bike that passed the checkpoints. No radar/lazer, no searching for reasons to fine, just a quick chat about what is important to survive the ride. A somewhat different approach to many.
