Horn issues

I think I may have cocked up somewhere on the horn relay wiring  ::)

When i fitted it a couple of years ago both horns seem to work and i thought i had it sussed, however both times when i have taken the bike for an mot test the horn hasn't worked......if i remove 1 wire from 1 horn then the other horn works absolutely fine but reconnect it and its not so good.

Can someone please simplify the relay fitting for me as i cannot seem to see where i have gone wrong.

I have: Switched live to 85
            Horn button to 86
            Ground to 30
            Horns to 87

I do have 12V to the horns with ignition switch on but this feeds direct to the horns without going through the relay?.....is this where i have mucked up?

Help please to put me out of my misery........and thanks.

Hi,
sometimes it is the push button which cannot close the connection. The switch case must have ground (-) and the small 1 mm pin inside is connecting. Parts inside have to be cleaned. Not a very good connection as the horns need some amperes.
Andre

thanks Andre i understand what you are saying but would that effect both horns operating together when 1 horn wired works perfectly?

I need to confirm that what i have wired is correct first and then look further,i was under the understanding that fitting the relay would take the load away from the button?

Here is how mine is wired, using the original horns harness.

If you're powering the horns through relays, there should be no current at the horns when ignition is on and the button NOT pressed.  Current should arrive only once the button is pushed.

Having only one horn working is a sure sign that not enough current is reaching the horns.

30 - 12V from battery
85 - ground
87 - horn
86 - horn button
The 2nd horn connection goes to ground.  You can either ground one of the connections of each horn, or you feed 87 to one terminal of one horn and connect the 2nd terminal to one terminal of the 2nd horn.  The remaining terminal is then grounded.

Simple as...

Hi Piet,

that is what i was thinking, the current should be coming through the relay...........It is the second horn connection which has me stumped........and i tried changing the connections on the relay as you show below but then nothing worked at all?

30 - 12V from battery
85 - ground
87 - horn
86 - horn button

I will now try as you say the grounding of the second horn and see what happens.........as i had it before with ignition on if i ground it it went off without pressing the button.......did make me jump!

Thank you for your help

Steve,

Please consider my previous post as utter BS... sorry.

30- +12v battery
87 - horn
86 -switched 12v
85 - horn button

The horn button completes the "actuating" circuit, a little solenoid that throws a contact between 87 and 30.

:'( it not working...........Wiring it up as

30 - 12 volt (switched)
85- ground
87- Horn
86 - horn button

relay doesn't even click?...... mildly confused now.

Ha Ha........We may have success,..... by linking 12v supply 30 - 86, Horn button 85 and Horns 87 and grounding the remaining horn connections they both sound with vigor.

I will now properly connect up and see what happens.

Piet,you may be forgiven  :)

FRAM make great Horns and Fog Lamps.

Do NOT like their Oil Filters - Go Purolator or WIX.

Can't see you needing any more then a 15 AMP Horn or a Fog Lamp Relay.

Other then I always ran 30 AMP Relays.

Sure enough to TAX your 70 750 SF Dymano ;o)

NOTE: My Fog Lamps and Horns are FRAM.

The Bike is 17.5" wide at the Bars.

I'm going to light up the road and be heard when I want to be.

Red is an Expensive Color but Automobilists might actually see you ?

A bit confused here. Isn?t the idea with this relay that the electromagnic switching circuit is charged by power in one side of the coil and it is activated when the horn button is pressed and hence earths the other side? That then closes the switch contacts which connect live feed to the horns which are earthed via their bodies (on horns with two terminals one of the terminals is earthed?). None of the terminals on the horn relay are directly earthed?

Very helpful description of operation of the relay makes for a simplified explanation of the theory behind it and easier to understand for me (bigthumb)

Horns are now working together in harmony as they should be, god help anyone who gets to hear them :D happy to recognize and admit that something wasn't quite right on my side of things.

many thanks to Piet for your help, advice and patience  (bigthumb)
