Horn mounts

Not the most "Mission Critical" technical topic, I know  :D.  But can someone please tell me:

1.  What the spring mounts of horns are for.

2.  Are they necessary?

I'm talking about the bit arrowed, btw:

I ask 'cos I'm feeeling a bit ticked, having left a nice black Voxbell 'Out there', somewhere ...  >:(  >:(.

It was mounted using a set of FIAMM spring mounts which I started using after I lost a previous set of horns mounted using Voxbell springs.  Now, the FIAMM mount lasted 8 years as opposed to the few months of the Voxbell mounts; but even so, I'd rather just stop losing horns!

Which begs the question: why can't I just bolt the things directly on to the steel mount (# 12 in the piccie)?

TIA

P.s Bike is a RGS Corsa, so obviously it doesn't vibrate ... :-*  :-X

Craig - the multi-piece metal strip is supposed to withstand vibration better than a solid mount! Not lost one yet on an RGS or Corsa but appreciate that is little consolation to you.  Some butch 180 types resort to using a tie wrap as a safety strap....

Ta Rob - pretty much what I thought, but thought it best not to assume  ;).

I can only see that the springs must fatigue after a few years ... So, any idea what might be the consequence of bolting the horns on directly?

The horns dont seem to work properly without the spring steel strip Craig. I dont think you have any choice but to use them.

Wot he said.

Ta boys.  Yeh, I had noticed that the horns aren't as 'bright' when solid mounted  :( ...

Pants.  Guess I'll just have to add, "Check horn spring mounts" onto the service schedule.  Finding black faced Voxbells ain't gonna get any easier ...

Any one got a nice Alto one, btw?

Ciao

Ones from Made in Italy  are or were a good price, chrome anyway, the trouble is they only come with three leaf spring plates and you need five otherwise they break and you lose your Voxbells.I also zip tie them for added safety.

I've seen packing case metal straps cut to length - they are spring steel the same (or very similar) to the originals - bit cheapskate - but seem to do the job - Regards - Phil

The discerning keeper of horns, takes them off and puts them on the shelf.

Blip of the throttle and boot kicking off the mirror will replace and suprisingly have more impact than said valuable horn

If you feel the need to have a horn on a lav, buy a cheap moped horn and hide it under the tank

Ta Shaun.  Really looking for a black one for the Corsa.

Yep, now you say it, I remember that seemed to be the problem with the Voxbell ones. The FIAMM ones are much more butch.

Noted ... ;)

I has a rigid mount break last month on my RGS, the horn was just dangling there in the fresh air.
The horn was a small aftermarket one changed in the UK as the standard one had failed.
Now if I could just find that pesky spring strip and fit a voxbell.........
