How Many Links?

19/40 tooth front/rear 530 sprockets need a 106 link chain for a 180.

Hands up anyone who has stuffed this up once, did my mistake a long time back. I wanted to arrive at the shortest wheelbase I could, and that resulted in to tight a chain. Expensive balls up that one.

Yep, my hand is rising. Wanted to get my Bultaco wheel as far forward as possible. After a quick look I was sure there was enough space to take a link out.  Nope.. Doh...

I've an almost new RK GXW chain joined with a riveted joiner that is 102 links long. I didn't want to grind out the joiner just find out it was 4 links short for the 3CL. It will fit an ST4 Ducati, so I'll put it aside for that.

Thanks all for the advice!

Regards, Greg

Easy check is to fit the full-length chain and squeeze the links toward each other with suitable pliers and see if it will have enough slack when suspension is taken into account. Measure, then cut!! I use a 'hooky' on bicycles - spoke with a hook bend at both ends so I can get an accurate picture of how long a chain is required.

Could never understand why anyone would want to do that ....... it's not going to make your bike handle better. If anything making it longer would make it handle better ..... puts more weight on front wheel.

Better is subjective, I wanted faster steering as I manly ride tighter roads. As in 250GP as opposed to SS Bevel type steering, in reality, its 3/5th of fuck all. As if 10 to 15mm makes any difference in a 1500 mm bike that weighs 200 plus kgs. But its fun to play with this stuff as long as you don't root a brand new $250 chain.
