How serious is this

After a basic clean up the is some marking of the crank  and gearbox bearing surfaces.
Mostly it appears to be superficial but the RHS mains surface actually feels rough. My plan was to polish it back smooth without removing any excess material and then use bearing seal when re installing . Or is that overly optimistic?

As others have said - don't polish it!

Loctite (and others) produces a bearing retainer that can fill in imperfect bearing surfaces.  I have dealt with this in the past, but can't remember which product I used - I will check my notes.

Paul, it may not look as bad if you can get your vapour blasting mate to clean the cases. Mine looked pretty bad when I pulled them apart, but a lot less scary after blasting.

Literally safe to blast the bearing surfaces?  I guess if you are carefully ..would pucker up the face a bit and improve the contact area?
 
I wouldn't be blasting bearing surfaces with anything if it can be avoided. That bearing surface doesn't look at all bad to me - my SF ones were a lot worse. If by chance you are having your crank rebuilt or getting a replacement, Red drills and pins the bearings/cases to prevent any further spinning (a common occurrence on Lav cranks). Loctite is fine, if used properly, but can be problematic if it starts to set before the cases are bolted down (I've only had this happen once).
 
I have come across pinned bearings in  marine engines before ..was wondering about that as a useful mod..have the same issue with the gearbox main bearing too. I  can guarantee getting the cases together and buttoned up won't be a quick and easy affair.
 
I did pin mine a few decades a go, but nowhere near as neatly and professionally as Red had done my new ones for the SFC crank. Back then I had a guy with a big cutting disc on a mitre type thing put a small nick in the outer mains between the outside edge and the snap ring groove and I fitted a smallish roll pin into the case to match - no compromise on strength and solved the prob of spinning completely. Didn't even need Loctite. I know Kwaka Z900 and 1000s had pinned mains.
 
If you can find someone with a carbide mill drill, just get it done to your std bearings. My roll-pin and cutoff-wheel-nick fix worked just as well as anything. Just have to mate the hole in the case accurately.

I think my crank will  already have new bearings fitted  .. Could I do the side pin  with bearing in situ?  Dremel?
