How to dis-assemble a pair of Ceriani shocks?

I have the springs off but want to remove the top mount from the chrome rod, then replace the seals.
Also how to refill with oil, quantity, viscosity?

Looks like a peg spanner will undo a cover to gain access to the seals but then what.
I have the seals already by the way.

Anyone?

Thanks, but 3 things...

I don't have a peg spanner
It still does not show me how to remove the top mount from the rod
My German is nicht zo gut!

Looks like undoing the cover with the peg spanner lets it dis-assemble nicely though.

Hi Grant,

The top mount is welded solidly to the rod.  You can remove it, but only with a saw/grinding disc.... :D

Afraid you're a bit lost without a peg spanner.  Mostly, the rods are corroded or worn, the oil seal buggered and the top cap rotted.  The overhaul set that is currently available contains a new damper rod complete with top mount, seals, washers and new cap.  So you could even resort to opening the suckers with a hammer and punch!  Or you could make your own peg spanner using Lothars' recipe, an adjustable spanner with a couple of holes to take bearing rollers as pegs.  Fully adjustable to boot.

Do you by any chance have the correct seals?  These are specially formed items unique to Ceriani, cannot be replaced by anything off the shelf.... and the damper rod is 9mm(or was it 11?) in diameter, narrows down your choice considerably.

I use a light fork oil, eg, 5W.  Fill the body about 3/4 and fit the damper and push down as far as it will go, excess oil will over-flow, remove a little more to make room for the seal and top cap and button it up.

Hmm, looking now for an overhaul kit as the rods are a bit crappy.
Where to find them?
I am sure I can bodge up improvise a peg spanner system.

Hi Grant,    you can make an adjustable one using an old crescent.  I am sure its been covered here before.  I am sure others will illucidate.  Classic Bike magazine covered it.
I think either Lothar or henry put up a picture of one some time ago.

I dit the same job few weeks ago.
The best way (no hurry) The nut is usually very solid:
1: use a couple of days penetrating oil
2: take a gas burner and heat the steel housing round the top nut
3: Take a hammer & punch and turn the nut in the 2 holes (normal right hand thread)

Oder by Oct a new seal set and new stainless rods

4: Paint and rechrome al the parts
5: put it back together

The seal set costs 59,02 Euro included VAT. The rods i dont know.

Yep - I improved the tool shown on the italobikes page a bit (see below); you have to first remove the hole damper unit out of the damper, then you can unscrew everything from the bottom up, remove the seals and renew them. There was a guy in Germany (Matthias Geyer; can send you his e-mail-address offline) offering the seal-kits for something like 25 or 30 ? a pair I think. They are machined alloy with a seal press-fitted in. Have given my last 2 to Scott Potter, he might be able to make a foto and post it with dimensions...

Oh - just a little hint: put a little O-ring first on the drill-bits, that keeps them from falling through... I used 4mm drills (a bit stronger) and widened the holes in the top nut to fit the 4mm drills. Make sure you drill the tool with the surface that touches the top-nut later on being flat on the drill-table. Best done with a Standbohrmaschine (drill-press?). Lots of WD 40 and a bit of heat with a heat gun should make the sucker release the nut.

May the force be with you!
