Hub Centre Steering- who’s ridden a one?

I rode the Yamaha GTS back in the day. It was OK, no real issues that I saw in the limited ride I took, it just wasn’t much better than the forks of the time. You got the idea that it was early days and that there was lots of potential in the idea. It just needed someone to throw money at it to develop it to the level telescopic forks were. Too bad it hasn’t happened yet. Maybe with 2wd hub motored electric motorcycles we can get there. Probably with motion sensors for full stabilization and gyros for self balancing!

I do think the Ital-Jet scooters with hub-steering are totally cool looking though and are maybe the cheapest way to get on two wheels with that kind of front end. I’d love to have the one with the biggish engine for styling down to the coffeehouse on a sunny afternoon.

I've also been intrigued by hub steering for a long time. I've always fancied having a ride on something like a Bimota tesi, but it hasn't happened yet, and probably isn't likely to.

A few manufacturers had a bit of a dabble with it a couple of decades ago (Yamaha and Bimota for example), but it seems to have faded into obscurity since then.

You'd think if hub steering was as good as its proponents reckon it is, then it would be on a whole bunch of high spec race bikes. I've never seen one in MotoGP.

Well funny you meantion that. I am not 100% certain on this but have noticed a quick story pop up on THAT place re a bunch in Queensland who built and showed a chassis that includes centre hub and ran a Ducati engine, I saw a test ride vid by whats his name, Ozzie plumber who won a few TTs, Cam Donald.

They announced they have built a Moto 2 race bike. I have no idea if it can legally race but that would be fantastic if it could, back to Elf Honda days.

Phillip Island – Aussie MotoGP weekend.
We had a VERY positive response to the display of the MotoinnoTS³ Moto2 race bike.
Not only from a very intrigued public, but also an enthusiastic supportive response from the DORNA and Moto2 execs. Dunlop very generously left us some Moto2 tyres and we have arranged to purchase a genuine Moto2 765 race engine. Things are hotting up for us as we aim to finish the bike build during November for track testing December and January. Please Like here so we can keep you updated.

Of course a few race bikes used the technique. Nessie springs to mind, the Mead and Tomkinson triple, and the lovely French Elf racers.

I'm in the feet forward, hub steering camp. When I was living in Milton Keynes in the 80's I was very keen on the idea of getting Hejira Developments to build me a 500/600 F2 special using one of their frames and their hub centre steering system. However, a move to the IOM meant the idea fizzled out.
An article I found on Nessie below.

I have a couple of hub centre steering bikes. One is a difazio 3c laverda that's well known in laverda circles, I bought from Andy Lloyd about 20 years back.
The other is a ner a car model c which is fitted with a 350cc sidevalve blackburne engine made in 1926.

How would you describe the DiFazio ride to someone who hasn’t ridden HCS ? The Ner a Car was way ahead of its time, great pair of bikes.

Many years ago there used to be an Auto Sparky shop down near Chinatown in Sydney that I passed every day and parked beside their roller door inside was this very odd-looking bike with a scooped-looking front end and heavily valanced mudguards. Absolutly fascinating-looking bike. My one and only Neracar, never seen another. I wonder where it went.

The difazio like all hub steering bikes has a limited turning circle.
It's very stable at speed and does not dive under braking. It's one of those bikes you either buy in to it or stick with something conventional.
