Hurricane Ian advice needed (no Laverda content)

Hi all,

I've scheduled to travel to Jacksonville FL tomorrow via NY for a conference all week long and would like to have your opinion whether this is a good idea with the foreseen hurricane Ian.

I wouldn’t worry about it in Jax. Now if you were going to Tampa/St Pete, that would be different. We based our liveaboard boat there for several years, spent lot of time there, there are some great places to eat there. There are several little neighborhoods with their own restaurant scenes. For a great authentic carbonara and all things Italian, try La Cena. We are also partial to Crane Ramen in Five Points too, Black Sheep is also there and is excellent. If you are driving you can use my secret parking spot in the bank lot across the street once they close at 5pm! I just park in the drive through teller lane……

Thank you Alzero, we are not used to these weather Phenomena in Europe and with a statewide FL emergency declared, I'm less enthusiastic travelling there... Better ride a thundering Laverda!
 
Jacksonville is not a low lying area like Tampa and is 40k from the sea so there will likely be little flooding and that will be confined to parts of the river side. This is only if the storm is still strong after making its way across the state to the Atlantic coast. The big downtown hotels are in the river area but are elevated for this reason. Just bring rainwear if you plan to go out, an umbrella will not be much good in high winds. Waterproof footwear or overshoes will help too. Or just sit in the hotel bar and watch the storm on the TV.

Tampa, St Pete and especially StPete Beach are only a meter above normal high tide and have not been hit directly by a hurricane in 50 years or more. Lots of homes at risk there, it will be interesting to say the least!
 
Taking a risk going there, and you might want to check your travel insurance covers shit like that. The most predictable thing about a cyclone (hurricane, typhoon) is that it is unpredictable. Generally do x but just as often don't. My son just arrived in Florida for a week parachuting practice before the world champs later in Arizona, everything is shut down.
 
Well after a 800 km car ride to Atlanta a flight to Washington DCA a metro and bus ride to Washington IDA a flight to Londen and a flight to Geneva, I arrived safe and sound at home.
