That sound like at least a good test, if I had a spare set of 38mm forks.Plenty of bikes with 38mm mazz forks that work fine, std or even better with some updating but not these particular forks.
 
Surely you could fit a pair of Laverda forks with miles of surplus tube sticking out the top just to ride on your private test track (ahem) to see if it makes any difference.
 
I?d be swapping the front end with something era sympathetic. SV650 comes to mid. FFS, mind.
I say that because I have a whole front end ready for use, on another project.
