Ignitech Com cable driver for USB-Serial Controller D (Windows 8)

Can anyone provide me with some info on where to find this effing thing? I have been using a shitty Surface Pro donor PC for my Igni programming, but it's alweays been a bit flaky and moreso now - to the point that it 'connects with TCIP4' but then disconnects when I try to read or programme. Totally over it.

I decided to buy a used Dell from my local friendly computer man, Jimmy, and the Igni software has successfully downloaded onto it. But when I plug in the USB-Com cable it recognises it but says it requires a driver (USB-Serial Controller D). Internet searches have sent me on time-wasting dead ends. Why does this stuff have to be so bloody complicated?!

I'm not a PC guy - but Ignitech refuse to create software for use with Macs ... go figure. Also, would I be better getting Jimmy to install Windows 10 rather than 8? Or no benefit? I had him install 8 because that was what was in the Surface Pro and it had worked.

Cheers,
Quentin

Q, I had the same problem, Cam came to my rescue, solved my issues

You’ll need the driver, usually pretty straightforward to download, surely someone on here can give you step-by-step, but if you’re really having trouble maybe take it back to Jimmy and get him to do it as after-sales-service 👍

Should work with Win 10. That's what I use when setting up the program on my desktop computer. I use a 9V battery to power the unit up for initial program uploading. It works fine.

I also use an old Dell laptop (with serial port) on bikes in the workshop. It has Win 7 and it also works no problem.

Installing the correct driver won't solve your problem if the adaptor doesn't have the correct conversion protocol.

The USB-Serial adaptor must have a Prolific PL2303RA chip. You should be able to find them at any computer supplier or on eBay. Ignitech also sells them https://www.ignitech.cz/en/vyrobky/accessories/usb-com/usb-com.htm

Note that even the PL2303RA won't work with Win 11. I dunno what Ignitech is doing about that.

It would make life easier if they just made their ignition with a USB port rather than a Serial port. I dunno why they have stayed with the serial port. Perhaps some computer boffin has an explanation.

Thanks Cam. The cable I bought from Jaycar (pics attached0 doesn't specify what type of chip it uses. Is it possible that even though it 'worked' - as in connecting to the TCIP and operating the Run, Read and Program functions - and successfully loading my advance map - it may be the reason the advanced functions I programmed didn't result in actual changes to the advance curves under strobe? ie, 'Correction for Cyl1' and 'Use advance map 2 for Cyl2' had no effect on the strobe reading when i was trying to correct a difference of 3-4 deg between cylinders.

If the Prolific PL2303RA chip isn't specified, I'm thinking it isn't present. So if I go to a computer shop and specify a cablew with that chip, I should get what I need?

While I was photographing the package, I discovered the little Driver CD hidden inside! not that I have a bloody CD drive to run it from, even if it is the driver I need!

go online and enter Digitech XC4834 in your Search engine
find their website, go to Downloads, find the correct Driver, Download it to your Hard drive
then install it

Quentin,
I use this:

Aten USB to RS232 Convert Adapter 35cm DB9 Serial Cable for PC MAC POS UC232A

Tried a couple of different ones for connecting to a RS232 coax cable test set.
This worked a treat .

Thanks Red and Phil. Cam, I'm pretty sure this com cable is compatible, even though it makes no mention of the Prolific chip isn't specified. The spiel says it is compatible with all devices requiring a serial port connection.

Red's search info took me to the actual item I bought from Jaycar and it included downloads ... and in there was a Zip folder with the driver. Installed and visible and should function just fine. I even managed to reassign the port number after dumping the crap taking up the low numbers in there that I don't need. Will plug in and have a play tomoz.

Gotta say, none of this stuff is even remotely intuitive to a Mac user.

set the Port to Auto
Went one step further and assigned it to Port 1. I'show up m hoping this 'new' Dell will make life easier that the flaky tablet (a laptop lookalike).

While I've got you, do you know what polarity your HE boards run? I know you can set to auto, but the system has a short delay when starting while it ascertains the polarity. With the Ignitech board I ran the starter with plugs out but earthed and app connected - the polarity (minus) shows on the Bike page after a few revolutions.

as you just stated, the Ignitech software will tell you what polarity the triggers are
you just stated Minus so set the trigger setting to "Minus" and then check the "No polarity check" box
then send the change to the box by clicking "Program"

Done all that with the Ignitech board. When I fit your HE board and trigger I can check and change but thought you might know.

Quick follow up. Having plugged the 'new' Dell in with everything freshly installed (Ignitech app download, driver, OS) I have the same issue I'd had with the Surface Pro PC. Now looking at a replacement Com cable - the only thing common to both setups. If there's a conversion chip in there somewhere, my hunch is it's gone AWOL. I'll report back. (thanks to punters for help and advice)

Update - new Aten cable bought and plugged in. Everything working as it should. Whew!! I've never been so happy to see those words 'Settings are identical' on the screen! Into the bin goes the Digitech.
