ignition issue

hi folks, need help with HKZ ignition: i found #3 coil read open with a multimeter while #1 and #2 read 2.5kohms. Now i had this same failure on two different ignitions : they worked fine for a while and then blow. Is there any know explanation? i find this hard to understand as coil #1 and #3 are fired together . Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you so much in advance!

Possibly there is an open circuit in the third coil secondary HT cable and or plug cover, this will cause standing wave voltage reflections into a coils secondary winding. Effect can be shorted turns perhaps open circuit.

Depends on how you are measuring the actual coils ie looking back through the cover and HT lead wire, HKZ may or may not be "auto transformer" electrical connection primary to secondary windings, been a long time since have worked on that novel bosch design. Fairly robust electrically though can suffer from age fatigued wiring to and from the module. HTH j.

Hi thanks for your hints: i actually measured the secondary winding right at the coils terminal and ground. same thing i did for the other two coils that measured 2.5kohm hence i am pretty sure this is the coils that got blown (open circuit). Now i ' m traying to figure out possibel (known) cause to avoid having a new coil blown again knowing it's the second that has gone!

Persevering with the HKZ ignition is just going to cause you pain today and many days in the future. Replacing those or the BTZ ignition is the single biggest bang for buck improvement you can do. Admittedly the Redax kit is not cheap for the early bikes as it includes a complete charging system as well, but it's excellent value for money and will transform the bike.

guess you're right but i'm not into doing this. After all understanding the root cause is an intriguing exercise especially is i can get an help! thanks
