Hello all
When I got my RGS in 86, one of the first things I did, was to change to the Witt system, and it made a world of difference to the bike.
Now my new (to me) SFC still has the original ignition. A lot has changed in 3 and 1/2 decade. As I understand it, there are nowadays three option:
Witt, Sachse and Redax.
Naturally my question is: Which one should I go for?
Best regards, Niels

Either one will suffice……all xcellent bit of kit👍

Depends on what you want. If you want to program your own curves, work with TPS-Sensors and other stuff, the Redex/Ignitech System offers more options than you could ever think of. Not sure if it still comes with a Hall-Sensor, but it used to.

If you want a reliable system that has proven to work since 30+ years, have some options to set different curves for different modifications on the engine, DMC is a great system still, easy to install and set up and basically an "install and forget" option. It comes with an optical sensor that - if f.e. get's dirty or your Oil-seal in the primary cover isn't oil-tight - could theoretically cause issues. Never had that though in 22 years, but I know that some technical guys on here are no friend of that. If you use it on a bike with an electronic tacho (like the RGS), you need a "filter" to show the right RPMs. Not necessary on the SFC, as it has a mechanical Tacho.

I have no personal experience with the Sachse System. It looks though as if it has now also different curve settings and you can even adjust it for electronic tachos which need a rectangular signal with 5,x volts instead of those that simply grab their signal from the ignition coil. The sensor seems to be a kind of pickup-system.

So - 3 choices, all good systems. Up to you ;-)

€250 😯. Won’t chuck out that blue one I have tucked away then.

I had a similar reaction. That seems (in my opinion) a crazy price for an old blue box. It's almost twice the price of a brand new Ignitech box (€135 without VAT) that'll work with the existing pickups and do a much better job.

The "blue box" Moto Witt DMC 1 is a very old unit. It was superseded by the brown (gold?) box DMC 2 maybe 15 or 20 years ago, which has since been superseded by the DMC/32. A new DMC/32 for a 120° Laverda, complete with wiring harness, pulse rotor and pickup plate is around €400.

Buying any used ignition unit is a gamble, especially one that could be 30+ years old.

I had one of those blue boxes (for a 180° engine) on my Jota and I found it to be quite unreliable and very fussy about system voltage (needed its own little supply voltage regulator). I replaced it with an Ignitech. I don't remember what I did with the old DMC blue box. In my estimation it was worth nothing, so I probably chucked it in the rubbish bin.

Apologies Peder. I don't usually comment on the prices people ask for things. But in this case I think you may have misjudged the market.

Closer to 25 years, Cam.

When I left Moto Witt in early 1998, production of the DMC II was already ramping up, mainly due to many parts for the DMC I having become obsolete and to incorporate external programming feature and the removable pig-tail. Matter of fact, good chances that I actually assembled that blue DMC I!

DMC I enjoyed a production run from ca. 1984 to 1997.
