ignition timing SF2

Hi Chaps
I've now covered around 1000 miles on the SF2 as an initial shakedown and reckon it's pinking very slightly. Any suggestions away from standard settings to allow for modern fuels? I've found that, on inferior non-Italian bikes, that I've needed to retard it slightly, should I do the same. Any thoughts much appreciated.

Cheers

Assuming that you're basic setup is ok, make sure you're running the equivalent of grade 8 NGK plugs.
Have you strobed the timing to check the advance mechanism? I presume you're running points?

Hi Paul

yes, sorry, points it is. I'm considering an electronic setup, but as the bike starts instantly and idles perfectly, with good town manners, I'm slightly reluctant to change. It's only when winding it on it pinks a bit and doesn't have quite the high end tug I've experienced with previous Lav twins. Appreciate your comments, thank you.

And if you want to be precise, which isn't really necessary for ordinary road use, you'll want to make sure the timing marks are ok.

I also assume the engine isn't completely coked up?

Check carefully if your marks are correct to Top Dead Centre (check both cylinder sides) and use a piece of wire clamped to the motor as a pointer to the mark on the starter clutch instead of the distant marks.
What fuel are you using?
I am no doubt at odds with a lot of the forum. I reckon 40deg advance is too much and I reduce it to 35deg on a std motor. I used to have really bad pinging in hot weather. I set my SF2 up on a dyno, it has 10.5 compression now and the timing was most effective at 29deg (and I have it at 5 deg advance static for idle). It is really easy to put a dab of weld in the hole in the advance unit and file adjust it to whatever amount of advance you want. I can post a photo if you want to do this. Much cheaper than an electronic unit and you keep your points if you want that authenticity, however many here are totally happy with their electronic units.
