Ignitions

Cam,

The problem with the Ignitech is that the existing pick-ups are used, in our case 30+ year-old units on the brink of failure.  No great problem for somebody that knows which end of a screwdriver is which, but for the mechanically challenged, a considerable stumbling block.

Ignitech offers most of the hardware needed to replace old units, but brackets/base plates and rotors still need to be made.  This then shifts the quite low initial price into another perspective for buyers that need to rely on others to help them out.

After blowing up his race Beemer which was fitted with a crude system based on a Lav BTZ, my mate has now upgraded to a Ignitech, mainly because of the rev limiter.  I find it extremely easy to install and to set up, highly recommendable for somebody who knows what she's/he's doing!

G'day Piet

Yes, I was aware of the Ignitech's reliance on the original pickups. The wires to the pickups on the 3C looked a bit dodgy but tested out OK, so plan A was to use them. If the pickups had been knackered, plan B would have been to source some others from somewhere and figure out how to mount them. May have had to make an entire new backing plate. It wasn't needed this time but who knows, maybe in 6 mopnths the pickups will fail and I'll have to go back to plan B.

Cheers,
Cam

What is really sexy about the ignitech is that you can adjust almost anything on this unit. It even gives us Mikuni/Keihin users the ability to use a TPS and have a second map which is used depending on throttle position. Not easy to set this up though so that it really brings a benefit. Also it not only comes with a programmable rev limiter but also delivers a clear, programmable tacho-output! With this, you can use it easily on an RGS or even use a Zane CEV-tacho on our old bangers! Great thing I must say...  ;)

But as Piet said: you have to know what you are doing or else you can damage the engine seriously!

Hi Cam,
I can supply you with new pick ups and rotor if you wish for the Series 1.
Your choice of what type, you can have Sachse twin optical or Sachse twin Hall Effect.
Or I may even be able to supply an IIS twin Hall Effect unit, not certain on that, need to check if I have a board in stock, I have stacks of rotors for the IIS system.

Have the backing board in stock but by doing the above you are forced into using the alternator conversion.
So price may be against you.

Can discuss off line.

Hello to you.
I live in Finland and I have been following this forum with interest for a long time.
Ignitions has been a problem all the time when I'm riding  for Laverda almost 30 years.
I am a plumber, however, I began to think make their own ignitions. Fortunately, I found ignitech pages of my ignitions system would not have ever succeeded.
Year 2005 was ordered home from the device even though I was not sure what I get.
I installed to the box 1200 Laverda whit original pickup  and it worked a miracle happened I was very happy.
I have had ignitech in Corsa already in use for many years and I can say it is a good system. I have the original carburetors and TPS system, fuel consumption was the lowest at 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers. However, the engine worked well.
The installation can not be a problem for people who run and maintain for 30 years old Laverda. Must have a little think and to find out.

hi Leo. Just to say your english is fine and quite understandable. Bike talk is sorta universal. I find it easier to understand you than to understand autoelectrics.  Perhaps am doing it wrong..

Switching pickups like hall effects or optical will not work on the Ignitech (without another black box to change the signal).

I have developed new pickup systems for the Ignitech on both my SFC racebike (RHS crank mounted) and more recently on Crispin's Spaceframe (LHS Mk2 engine).  As soon as I get my 79 Jota back home (and find the time to do it) I was going to make a setup for that as well (keeping original alternator), so if anyone wants brand new pickup systems or entire wired up Ignitech kit, let me know (fitting also available, Southern NSW, AU).  It's a great system, especially for those who like to tinker... lots of possibilities.

Hello,
When I put Ignitech ignitions My 3C  became a problem with the power charger.
I bought Chinese elements,  they are be at an affordable price.
The end result was not quite what I was expecting a shark's charging current is 15A,
The result was not quite what I expected to 15A
but it was (140W) 10A. Full capacity will be 2500 already round.
I can run the lights on and the battery voltage is still well.
If Laverda does not begin to reject the Chinese technology.
Here are some pictures of the final outcome.

Your English is certainly good enough to discuss Laverdas, but it got a bit too Finnglish in your last post. "shark's charging current" does not translate too well. Can you say what you mean again, but with different words?

Ken

Ken,
Leo's got me pondering that one as well. The Finnish word for shark is 'hai', I wonder if Leo meant a high [ie max] charging currrent.

Hey Leo, feel free to write in your mother tongue - we will work it out somehow. You post looks very interesting. kiitos! Paul.

Hello
English language is difficult, although I used to write for two hours, was still wrong.
Maybe I should switch to one week a joke thread. :D
Google translator is not perfect.
Is it better now?

Steve, as far as I know Ignitech can provide ignitions that can work with hall effect sensors. I know of at least one bike with hall effect sensor and Ignitech. If you order a box for a bike usually fitted with inductive pickups you will probably get a box for this setup.
I did not yet but I will ask them for this ignition box sometime because I also think this is the most reliable and precise way to get an ignition signal. Although agree high precision is not too important for these old bangers. Strong sparks are more important.

Another reason I like Ignitech ignitions:

I went to go for a ride on my Ducati today, but it would only run on one cylinder. The rear cylinder wasn't firing.

After checking there was fuel, I pulled the rear spark plug and cranked the motor - no spark. OK, it could be the plug, coil, HT lead, pickup, ignition module, a broken wire, short or bad connection anywhere in the wiring between those components. Where to start looking? Well, with an Ignitech, the answer is simple. Plug in the laptop and crank the engine over... It immediately showed a failure status for pickup #1. I un-plugged the pickups and tested them with a multi meter. Sure enough, there was a short circuit between the two wires from #1. Followed the wires and found the insulation had broken away from both wires underneath a cable tie where it was pinched too tightly against the frame. The wires were shorting together. I separated the wires and wrapped them with insulation tape. Hit the starter button and fired up on both cylinders. Job fixed in 5 minutes.

It could have had me scratching my head for hours if not for the diagnostic feature of the Ignitech software, because the problem was hidden by the offending cable tie and the wires looked perfectly OK.

Like Laverdas, the Ducati pickups have wire leads with crumbly insulation. Must be some kind of oil/heat resistant insulation that has a use-by date of about 25 years. The insulation tape is a temporary fix. I'll have to replace the pickup wires eventually.

Cheers,
Cam

I really like the Ignitech, too, for several reasons (and I was not even aware of that feature, Cam! :) ). Basically it is cheap, flexibly adjustable, comes with connectors either made for the existing connections or for making adapters, the support is fast and multi-lingual and if ever the pickups fail - hey - simply make your own system or let them do it for you and you can use hall, pickups, optical or what ever sensors. Simply great! Also no tacho-issue with the RGS, as the tacho-output is adjustable with the - did I mention that? - free available software...  ;)

The only thing missing on a Bosch 180 is the additional charging coil. But for that, Red's solution he offers with the Sachse ignition would be a good fit I guess. Not sure though that works with the original pickups?!?...

Friend of mine just exchanged his RGS against a 3CL (I think). He had already installed the Ignitech to 2 RGS and so he called Ignitech again and got their offer...:

TCP4 plus two new coils plus installation material, packing and shipment: 207?. When he finally ordered, they recognized that he had ordered already 2 before and offered him a 10% discount!

The next bike that needs a new ignition will 100% sure get a Ignitech.

regards
