Ikon shocks

I recently bought a pair of Ikon shocks for my jota. From new they would top out. I have tried lots off different setting, But they continue to top out. Has anyone else bought these shocks and had the same problem ?

Yes, but years ago. Give them a call and see if you can exchange the springs for a heavier set, as I did. They have a large selection of different rated springs.

When mine first went on it wallowed, I needed to use damping position 3.Later the oil got changed to 7.5wt from std 5wt and I could back it off to position 1.For springs set the sag to 1/3 travel with you on the bike.It should have 10 to 15mm sag then without the rider. If it has more the springs are to weak if less the spring is to hard.I am far from a lightweight and still have the std springs fitted. You can do the cable tie trick with shocks to see how much travel your using, cutting the end isn't easy, don't scratch the rod doing it.

Sorry, automatically assumed the shocks were bottoming out. Still, Ikon will be able to supply a suitable set of springs.

Had a set of Ikons on my RGS for a few years now and have no problems whatsoever
Got them longer than standard, as recommended on this forum, think I gave my weight and riding style.
They were a "special build" but not bad value for money.

I sent my SFC Konis to Ikon to have them serviced, they were leaking, even though they'd only traveled less than 10k miles they were over 20 years old. Ikon reckon they couldn't fix them and recommended that I buy a replacement set of Ikons using the original Koni springs. If I wasn't doing a time trial the following w/e I wouldn't have brought them as I reckon shock technology has moved forward since the 70s. At $400 for the bodies only I could have got a set of YSS for the same price with springs and much more adjustment.
I don't rate Ikons anymore and I'm sure Ikon pulled a swifty with me wanting to sell me new shocks instead of fixing the Konis.
If I didn't live in an isolated area and in urgent need of shocks no way would I have brought them.

But Ikon sell serviceparts??? My BIL rebuilt his Konis using parts from Ikon. (And if you had called me I would have given you my old but still serviceable Konis)

Send Em back and they can put a heavier spring on them. I did that for my bmw ikon. They forgot to ask 8th I was a lardarse. When I got the shocks for argy they remembered I was a lardarse. ....

Being a Dealer for Ikon Suspension and Gazi shocks I usually ask the riders weight and intended use i.e. pillion passenger/extra luggage etc.and make a recommendation based on the info supplied? never be sensitive about saying your true weight, or that of your partner regardless of being fat or skinny :)

There is nothing wrong with Ikon shocks or the technology they use? We use them on the DAM racer and finished 2nd in the State championships in 2013 and third in 2014 so they can't be all bad, and, no business lasts for more than 30 years with a poor performing product.
What they don't have is adjustable compression damping, which on most accounts will get you into more trouble than you've already got because of a poor choice of spring. There are better spec /more expensive shocks for racing but I like to back our product and they are Australian Made.

Ikon give you the choice of chrome, black or aluminium body, with or without spring covers, chrome or black springs, skinny or barrelled springs, linear or progressive rate springs to cater for a wide range of loads. They are perfect match for the style of the 70's and 80's bikes. Pics here:

They are the only shock absorber Made In Australia with the strict quality control that is demanded in this country and for around or under AUD $400 is amazing value. Frankly I don't know how they do it for the price! they are rebuildable and parts are readily available if you wanted to have a go yourself but like a lot of things better to go new anyway.
DAM Racing ships worldwide often at prices better than you get by going direct to Ikon.

Gazi make good shocks too, a comparable set to the Ikon 7610 series will cost you RRP $690 or you can get  modern looking Upside Down Piggy-Back style with adjustable compression and rebound rate for RRP $780. They are all aluminium bodied, some versions are hard anodised. I believe there is a choice of springs although it's not listed and hasn't been made available to me at this stage.

These shock are made in Taiwan. Once again, being a Dealer for Gazi I can supply worldwide often at a better price than you can buy direct from the Gazi Website.

If you want to spend more money there are plenty of other manufacturers, it's horses for courses.
Get the correct springs for your weight / intended use, be meticulous in the setup and you'll be very happy?, they want you to be happy because its a very competitive market out there.

Just don't order a heavier spring, make sure its topping and not bottoming.Topping to me is  to strong a spring .Put a cable tie on the shock shaft and see how much travel your using on big bumps.Have a look at my first post re working out what spring you need.Unless there have changed there shocks DRAMATICAL or you weigh more than me,130kg I don't see going heavier on the spring as a good thing.Unless the spring YOU got is wrong.Sometimes there colour coded,a dab of paint on the spring.

IKON used to colour dots but now use numbers.
204#(dots:blue blue red ) is the most popular for Jota, next softest is 230#(dots: red blue), softer again is 249#(dots: white yellow blue)
Doubtful you would need to go softer than that.

I would have been alot happier if they had rebuilt my suppose to be rebuildable Konis instead of just flogging me a new pair of bodies. I felt like I was fucked over by them and you only get to fuck me over once so they're off my list of suspension suppliers.

Davo, I didn't know you back then so no chance of flicking me your old shocks in my hour of need. Thanks anyway.

Had to have a set of purple springs, the short pair, there are 2 separate springs on the dual Ohlins piggybacks on my vintage Husky dirt bike sent from Sweden.Steve Cramer, the importer had never used them before.Good for extra traction.BTW had those shocks for 20 years and they still have THE BEST ride quality, fantastic feel.Very very expensive though.

Sorry to hear the bitterness. A good reason to talk to a Dealer who cares about your return custom for other services rather than talking to the factory hand who is going to sell you one product every ten years.

Don't forget which side of your bread is buttered, and that buying from Dealers keeps us in business so we can still be around to supply all the other bits you need to keep your bikes going. The profit margins are small so every little bit helps.

Not really bitter Greg, probably an over reaction! At the time I was backed into a corner so had little option but to buy what they offered. Couldn't understand why the konis couldn't be rebuilt,
They'd traveled less than 10k miles. maybe they were fucked?? Pissed me off at the time though. It doesn't bother me anymore :D
