inlet balance pipe

Is there a preference over the type of pipe to use between the inlet stubs? ok to use soft fuel pipe or should it be the reinforced type?

reinforced it is then, has anybody tried putting a chamber (or whatever you would call it) between the inlets or was that just a 2stroke thing. I remember it being used on the LC yams but have a faint recollection of it being used on a 4stroke twin?

Stefan,
the plugged holes you're talking about are
for the synchronizing tool, not for balance
tubes.
The balance tube John was talking about is
on a 750, I've never seenthat on triples.

Juhuuu, hero member now!

Early triples had blanking screws, you can usually find a couple of spares under the starter motor, later bikes had brass tubes screwed into the same holes to which was fitted a ballance pipe linking the three carbs together. I fit the brass tubes to them all now simply to make it easyer to ballance the carbs, got to say I have never noticed any significantly different running with or without the connecting pipe.

So long as if there's no pipe the holes are blanked. If the holes aren't blanked OR joined by the balance pipe it'll run like a pig!

Phil has, apparently. :D

Not only him... Every triple at least from 1980 on had them (but I guess even the ones from 1976 on or so, maybe a bit later).

As Keith said, it makes it easier to just unplug the balancer pipe and put the Carb tune on. I have even modified the PHM 40 I had to have these connectors.

I know one thing about the Vacuum Balance Tube with my 750SF. If the walls of the Tube are Too Weak it will Collapse or Resonate causing the carbs grief and not atomize the Mixture properly. The Tube acts as a Manifold in my opinion. I use a Stiff Thick Walled Hydraulic Pressure Rubberized Hose.

Bloody hell - your engine must suck harder than a Bangkok hooker :o ...they are only little holes and I have never seen enough vacuum to disturb even the thinnest of tubes......

Darn right she "Sucks" and will rev near 8G's with VBH 30A's and Stock Cam. Could be the 30mm Carbs crating all that Vacuum. I would suspect the Vacuum to drop with Bigger Carbs and Cam.

I have tried silicon tubes and they do pulse so much, that the tubes inflate, no balancing anymore. Don't underestimate the under pressure our bangers produce...

Really doesn't matter if the tube stands up to the vacuum or not, main thing is that it doesn't leak.  Balancing effect is negligable, will only slightly help at minute throttle openings anyway.

The factory probably didn't trust 750 owners to replace a plug on the balancing stubs, hence the hose which is far more apparent.  After finding out what a pita is was to fiddle out the blanking screws and to fit the stubs to the triples, they did that themselves and connected them with a hose.  Nice solution but hose condition is critical in both cases!
