This is the head I took off my bike when I first had it, I wondered if anybody could shed any light on the why the intakes are like this? Old style head? Somebody's idea of a mod?

This is one of the very early heads from the 1000/1 drummers.
And the first run of disc brake bikes with no oil cooler and 35mm forks, mostly made in '73. I had one.
Replace those boots, they leaked bad enough when new, after 40 years you're courting disaster. Available from the common sources.

I have an identical head on my 3CL, which came to me with low mileage from a breaker who sold off bits from #1579 . The rubber sleeves on the stubs were a PITA to source, until I phoned Slaters, who had them.

Stefan,

In 2008 nobody except Slater or Oro had them, Oro wanted 5x the amount Slater charged me with postage.
Apart from Andy, Wolfgang and OCT I called Bodo Bergman, Horstman, Schenk and Harry de Jonge, they all knew what I wanted but could not help me. Perhaps Andy and Wolfgang have them now, but back then I had to make a lot of phone calls until I found them.....

Regards,
Gerald

As others have said, it's an early head. Richard Slater has the rubber inserts (or did have a few years back). From memory, he charged about ?20 for three back then.

You will probably find you also have steel liners in the cam bucket holes. These were also changed and later ones had the cam buckets running directly in the alloy.

Probably there was a reproduction run not too long ago, Gerald. Seems quite a few of these early birds have survived with their original head still on it.

PS: Pete, AFAIK the bucket liners are made of cast iron. The liners are threaded into the head and replaceable in theory, in reality they are 100% unobtainium. They seem to be more sensitive to wear than the later buckets running directly in the alloy so oversize buckets might be required. Piet looked not very happy about it while I asked him to give my old cylinderhead a complete overhaul...

Stefan,

I am sure you are right -  cast iron is much more likely and I seem to remember them described as such. Being a non-engineer, I tend not to differentiate between the two.....result of ignorance I am afraid, sorry about that  ::)

Read a book on engineering materials a few years back and was astonished at the myriad of different iron and steel products. Always wanted to learn more, but the day job got in the way.

Thanks, guys, interesting, It does have cast iron liners for the buckets and Iron skulls. I took it off my bike shortly after I had it, didn't like the look of the rubbers, didn't think it looked a good idea. As you can see from the photo, cob webs and the dead woodlouse it's been lying in my garage for years as a spare, I might need it one day!

I think I'll try to source a new set of rubbers for it and clean it up a bit, make it serviceable.

Thanks

Managed to get some new inlet rubbers from Slaters if anybody is interested, very reasonably priced too  :)

Excellent!  Richard is always worth a call for parts, especially obscure ones  ;)
