Is this a diode?

I am trying to replace the home made loom on a 1972 750SF. Having pulled the old loom from the bike I found this plastic thingy in line with a wire (red, but then they all are on this bike) up at the front end. It is directional, having 'Generator' labelled on one end and 'Battery' on t'other. The part number on it is 0 212 911 001 which Googles as a rectifier.  The other changes I am making to the bike are replacing the Bosch headlamp with a CEV, and the ND switches with Lucas.

What is it? Why is it there? Do I need it?
All help gratefully received.

Gumbo, I was curious so I looked at the wiring diagram, found the diode no problems, element 61, almost right in the middle. I think it connects to the starter circuit, but my head started to hurt after I'd been looking at the crazy wiring for several minutes and I gave up. Good luck ...

I think you're wrong Ken, isn't it something to do with the headlamp?

Doesn't it make the pilot lamp go out when you put the headlamp on? 30 years is a long time.

Ken, Gumbo,

Ernesto is on the right track.  The diode prevents the bike from being started when the switch is turned to the right after ignition on.  The pilot light is powered, but the start circuit should not be.  Remove the diode and the start circuit WILL be powered, the bike can be started and ridden away, without keys!  It's because the ignition switch is lacking another set of contacts.  The pilot circuit is powered from the same contact that powers the ignition, the diode prevents the current to run "backwards" into the start circuit.

When the main beam is switched on, the pilot light remains on, it is wired together with the rear light.  Don't want to switch off the rear when switching on at the front, do we? :D

Ernesto et al, many thanks to you all.

I did try the search but plainly failed to see it. Likewise I fail to see it on the wiring diagram with which I am very familiar, having spent a few hours reproducing it in colour. All no avail as it bears no resemblance to my bike!

I'm still not 100% where to put it (don't) but will find out one way or another no doubt!

Thanks Stefan. That nails it.
I wish I could hide it all within the headlamp but reverting to a CEV dictates all the connections lie under the tank..
